Does anyone out there have any tips or experinced this problem im having--

Currently training a yearling section d colt, for inhand showing-
he has accepted the bit (the magic bit is being used as we had problems with the nylon no control with that he just chewed it to bits!)

i have no problem leading, trotting or standing ,respond to all voice aids etc...
but when i stand slightly opposite him as you would in your show line up-he tends to resits the preasure on the bit (this can happen when you start him in walk) steps back , rears and back flips sometimes it has happend when just walking him.
if a newmarket chain is used i can hold im down but if you try anything through the bit (leather lead or pony lead chain)hes back on his rear legs and over- he resists all pressure!!!

hes not an ill mannerd colt - have had worse but this problem is getting a pain and dangerous-
just want to know if a different bit would help? or any other suggestions-have thought of using a roller during training sessions but hes so young!

dont really want to show with the newmarket chain,

thanks all

I did have one mare who reared up when over-excited, it was not aggressive, I just trained her by saying "stop it" and pointed a finger at her eye, this seemed to work, not sure about young colts though.

Your colt is not 'resisting pressure on the bit', he is resisting pressure on his poll. His reaction to the pressure is to pull back. Your attempts to hold him are causing him to rear.

thanks, makes sence , what would you suggest to over come this resistance? beacause he only does this when a lead or chain is through the bit, but why is he less resistant with a newmarket chain? equal pressure helps, i dont apply to much pressure either
