Please could people list some recomendations for Trakehner event sires? After alot of disscussion and debate, we have concluded that other than using a TB or ISH, a Trakehner might be a good option for my mare. Really dont want to risk any other type of warmblood, as worried about suitablity for eventing, amount of bone, and blood. But Trakehners seem to be much lighter and more thoroughbredy in type?

So, any suggestions?

So far looked at Contis and quite like him.

Have you looked at Axis? He was champion jumper of his grading yet is competing at Grand Prix dressage in Germany. He's also sire of Hirtentanz, an outstanding young jumping stallion who is the first Trakehner stallion to be approved for Holstein breeding for several decades. So Axis gives you the best of both worlds: world class dressage and world class jump with the blood you need to do eventing.

Grafenstolz? he was stabled locally to me, know the ins and outs of whats happened to him, he had a terrible time as was looked after and treated appalingly badly,- so would perhaps give him the benefit of the doubt.

Otherwise fleetwater opposition, the front limbs on his stock look good generally? or his son Utopian Opposition- he was a grade A showjumper and there is a stunning video of him jumping amazingly on youtube.

I think you can also get frozen from Windfall, Darren Chichia's 4 star ride. There's another really nice Trakehner stallion that Kerrelli would know the name off, she looked at him last year but cant remember the name...but he looked really awesome.

For temperament, confirmation, movement, scope and performance record I would suggest Grafenstolz. I have been riding him while he is at stud and I will certainly be using him on my event mare this season

Would definitely recommend Contis OR Keatinge Trakehners new boy Cristobal, who is graded Trak and been bought in syndicate with Darren Chiachia (sp?) to replace Windfall.

We have a Grafenstolz foal due at the end of May out of a dutch warmblood mare Zadok/Nimmerdor who has been bred to event. We saw Graf in the flesh and despite his sometimes bad publicity really liked him. He moves very well get KR to send you a disc.

Yes, I have just come across this horse and really like the look of him. He would probably be very good value as compared to some of the bigger names but he has been selected by people who have impressive judgements.

Seabiscuit I believe that Grafenstolz was at Birkhof before he was brought across to GBR and I would be anxious if that was where you say he was so badly treated, I'm hoping not, that is a big name and a big stud

In addition to the ones mentioned

Grand Prix
EH Sixtus
Tzigane
El Greco
Artistic Rock
EH Buddenbrock

Ballzauber
Zauberruf
Fandango
Stiletto

What about Sacha Pemble's useful stallion - Woodlands Unique Comet by Star of Orion out of a Fleetwater mare.

I think he now stands in Ireland? Saw him go like a dream around the Hickstead Eventers Challenge. He retired from eventing with 181 points

Have you considered either of the two Whorridge stallions, No Limit or Grannex? We are using No Limit on 3 mares this year. Look at what he has produced.

Alec.

Well you've picked a perfect breed for eventers by looking at Trakehners.

Would have to put Axis up as a serious horse. Moves, jumps, great trainability, superb offspring, and they are often really good looking horses too. He comes from a sire line of proven eventers and jumpers, and like SS said, his son Hirtentanz has superb jumping ability and unusally for his stamp and breed, as been approved by the Holstein verband. We have an Axis daughter here who is a jumping machine (won the loose jumping champs at the breed show as a 2yo and won the same class at east of England show that year and was Elite graded by the Futurity a year later). She was a total sweet heart to back, great work ethic and actually was a multiple champion in hand in hack and riding horse classes, so has beauty as well as talent. And he's British owned too

Axis's son Hirtentanz is a lighter framed individual than his sire, but what scope and ability and again a super brain.

Windfall carries a lot of TB blood andis proven at the highets levels, and frozen is available over here.

Abduallah is also available frozen and as a champion at the top levels in show jumping you cant deny his ability plus his offspring jump too.

Herzensdieb is a very scopey individual with an incredible canter. We had a cracking colt by him last season that has beauty and movement in equal measure, so we have retained him. Stud are great to work with too.

Kasparow has evented to a decent level, but is also a total all round athlete having turned his hoof to everything and the most honest and straight forward ride. Again a great jumping/eventing pedigree.

Laurel is by Stan the Man xx so a great source of eventing blood and although he's quite a rangy type, again the canter is superb.

Another horse with a good canter and technique who went to the Bundeschampionate as a young horse, plus he is coloured if you like that sort of thing, is Camaro. But I'd only use him on a mare with a good front leg. Seen some super moving foals by him.

Contis has also produced some very attractive foals and was purchased for an eventing career. The same stud have goddington Hannibal, who was shortlisted for the Swedish team and I know mare owners have been very pleased with their foals by him.

Also over here at Keatinge Stud are two young stallions, Singing Horatio and Cristobal. Cristobal again hails form the great Sixtus line and TB on the dam line, and is again a real eventing stamp. Neat and not over big again he has a super canter.

Tycoon puts a big canter and lot of jump on his stock but he himself is quite a big framed horse for a Trakehner. having said that my two Tycoon daughters are both on the smaller side. He can throw sharp, but is a wodnerful broodmare producer and my younger filly has also inherited his huge trot.

Fleetwater Opposition has a superb record as a producer. I wouldnt use him on a quirky mare, or one with poor feet, but his offswpring have the guts and brains for the job.

Those are just a few to consider. Depends on wether you are breeding to sell or for yourself and of course on the mare herself. My personal favourites from that list are Axis, Herzensdieb and Abdullah.

Volatis, you really know your stuff re Trakehners! I take it you are a fan?

Very interested in Laurel. Do you know anything about his progeny?

LOl bearskin, they are my passion! All the horses bar one in my signature and avatar are either Trakehners or part breds

I've not actually seen any laurel offspring yet. He was kind of forgotten about but I know he caused a bit of interest i think it was 2 years ago at the Trakehner stallion show so hopefully there will be more offsrping around soon.

Axis is wonderful, ticked all the boxes for me (after long discussion and appraisal of my mare by volatis, who really really really knows her stuff!) but unfortunately i missed the cut-off date of the end of his season last year and used something else, not my best ever decision. :( :(
Kasparow is by the same sire iirc, and looks like a wonderful horse in every way - performance, temperament, turns his hoof to anything, great website is well worth a look.
