Had the most fabulous weekend in Germany at the Trakehner licensing and auction. If I loved the breed before I am now obsessed. The quality was breath taking, wish I could truely explain how good it was. Even the colts who didn't grade were the most fantastic riding propsects. And if anyone dares say they dont like Trakehners as they are all mad/hot/crazy... The atmosphere was like a rock concert at times and these colts came in time and time again for their loose jumping/free schooling/movement on a triangle etc etc. And what I loved was you could go round the stables and see them all close up.
So pleased I got to see some of these colts in the flesh as it is quite something to be able to judge them close up, not off videos or photos and also to compare different bloodlines against each other.
What was interesting for me was it re-enforced certain bloodlines that I came back to time and again - Gribaldi through his sons Hofrat and Distelzar - always knew I liked this line, but loved every colt and mare from it. Freudenfest - a stallion I didnt know too much about, again loved the way he strongly stamps his offspring. And the Buddenbrock/Connery stock were my type too.

The mare's forward for the mare championship and the ones for the auction were of a ridicuosly high standard. I wish I had had some spending money.

The Pidgleys bought the auction champion Grand Passion (Oliver Twist x Polarion). His half sister (by Gribaldi) was mare champion and the dam is a full sister to Grafenstoltz. he was 300k. The reserve champion stayed in Germany and was only 60k as he was chestnut - big bias from breeders against chestnut, seen in the auction prices, yet the riders dont care if its green with pink spots as long as it moves.
The coloured filly foal at Camaro was top lot at 22k, and it was very smart and really moved. The top selling riding horse made 55k and compared to the prices at Verden was a bargain - he had the biggest flamoyant movement without looking like a Hackney (as some of the Oldenburgs seem to be occasionally) and the lightness and quality the Trakehner is so proud of. He was Buddenbrock x Consul, so I loved his pedigree too.

My mare Cover Girl's half brother was bought by a british buyer for 18k and her other half brother Connery was responsible for the Reserve Champion Colt and one of the nicest riding horses who sold for 19k, so it was good news for her pedigree!

Now I just have to wait till February to go back again for the stalion show

Ooh, that sounds like a lovely time. I'm not sure I'd want to go and tempt myself looking at animals I'd never afford, I might come home and look at my shabby lot and be depressed! Very interesting what you say about the bloodlines. Am I right in thinking that the Traks are the only closed studbook of the "warmbloods"?

Sounds like you had an amazing time!! My girl (see siggy) is part bred trakehner by VaTout and unfortunately she is a classic example as to why some people don't like them i.e hot/crazy/completely mental!!! But she is exceptionally pretty and my god can she move ( but only when it suits her!!!)

Sadly Va Tout and Fleetwater Opposition were two of the most used stallions in the Uk and both were known to be hot - like Jazz is, in Dutch breeding. But the Jazz foals go to pros who want that extra turbo and spark, the Va Touts and Opoositions are ferraris and not the type for the average amateur. Thats why i wish more people could see the temperament of the stallions and mares this weekend, it would kill off a lot of the stories.

Wow what a fantastic report, it sounds like you had an amazing weekend.

Im absolutely gutted i was unable to go, i had been looking forward to it for months!!

Were there any other british buyers there at the auction?

A British buyer bought a coloured filly by Karolinger which I think was over the phone so I have my theories as to who that was. Muschamp Stud bought the graded stallion Midway but they are based in France now.

I know woodcroft stud were there but we left before the end of the auction to ctach our flight so dont know if they bought anything. A british buyer was bidding for the Camaro filly.

I also have a feeling that a British buyer bought one of the mares but my german is non existent so couldnt catch it. Benjis Girl - you should try and get to Munster Handorf in February for the stallion show - its fabulous mouth watering viewing

I would absolutely love to, i will have to see what im upto in February!

I find the breed so fascinating and since owning Tilly i have learnt more about the various breeding lines. Some of the horses this weekend had absolutely amazing breeding. I can't wait until Trakehners International put their report on the web!

Our PB yearling is far from hot, & has has so many compliments from the vet & dentist. Now this may change when he comes under saddle, but at the moment he just takes everything in his stride. Like TB's & Arabs I think there is an eliment of mis-handling that contributes to their temperment as much as breeding. I think this years colt could go either way & he is ISHx. If they are sharp then they only need to be handled incorrectly for that to snowball.

Thankfully i have a lot of experience and my girl spent her younger years with me while i was working for Jennie Loriston Clarke but i dread to think what she would have turned into if someone inexperienced had bought her!! She is KWPN on her dams side by Nabuur and there are steady elements to her temperament but she is unpredictable.
