Well I am still totally exhausted.

ashbank was there too with her mares so I am sure she will fill you in.

The judging seemed tough this year, only 3 premium mares, a 9yo, 5yo and one 3yo. Only 1 colt forward in the end who didnt grade but the judges took a long time to decide so must have been a close decision. I only took Elf and Tia in the end, Elf passed her grading and speaking to the judges afterwards was glad to see I knew of the weak points they picked up on, and got some good future stallion advice for her. They all thought the foal was a good improvement on her so I obviously made a good choice picking Latimer last year.

Tia was 3rd in her foal class and although the numbers were down a little from last year, it was a strong class. The winner went on to win the foal championship and take overal reserve supreme!

Really pleased with how both my girls behaved and thank goodness I had some help as I ended up going on my own with OH staying to babysit sick ponies at home.

Agree that the judging was harsh in some places, but I was pleased with the comments I got on my mares. Both passed their grading, and I got some very nice comments on one of the mares in particular, as well as some advice on stallion choices.

Foals were very tired, but I was pleased with their behaviour - it is a big ask when they have travelled that far, and I almost think that I won't take any more foals at foot that distance. Unfortunately we had to this year as it was the only opportunity to get the mares graded (I really didn't want to wait until 2009, as I wanted the feedback before I put them in foal again).

Very positive comments on the Utah van Erpekom colt, who was Reserve Part Bred Champion. Erhard Schulte (who was not judging the foal class, but came up to me after the mare trot up) concurred with Hans-Leonhard Britze from last week that he is a super colt with great limbs. It's fab that people who are so knowledgable about Trakehners are seeing the value of a part bred here, and are admiring him for his qualities even though he is not a purebred.

Mind you, I got very positive feedback on him from people on here as well!!

Thanks so much both of you and well done on your results. Particulary pleased to see your part bred was well recieved!

I would have loved to have taken Toffee and Cookie but the distance was a big turn off for me too. Also, Toff has lost a bit of condition recently so decided I might try again next year when Cookie is older and when Toff in foal again. Were there any reasons you could see for the 'harsh' judging? Were the judges picking up similar faults on each mare?
PS I got the letter today V - I am sooo stupid!

some photos courtesy of Ashbank! Considering how close we were to loosing Tia, its quite something to see her like this

I know the judges were hot on correctness/straighness this year so really marked low any dishing etc and I know Elf dishes with one front leg so her score for limbs and trot suffered. But it hasn't come through in the foal at all. I also think if I had presented her as a more mature horse (she is still backward even at 4) with muscle tone from being in work, I am sure we could have squeezed a few more points, but I was so pleased with her attitude to her first ever outing, and she did get good scores so nothing to complain about.
