Trakehners

Awww, your lad sounds lovely

I have a Trak x TB (from quite a prominent UK Trak line). He's a sharp little thing, but looks mainly TB.....unfortunately I rarely see a big Trak trot unless he's showing off in the field

He's super intelligent - picks up things so quickly and stresses if he doesn't understand - but is a pleasure to train. However he is a stress bucket, and gets worried/panicked pretty easily.
He is certainly not a novice ride (even at 18!) and can be a spooky, hyper loon when he's stressed.
Around the stable he's a little gem, very affectionate, has great manners (as long as he's treated firmly), and adores people.
He is very versatile - in his time has done BE, BSJA, BD and tried his hoof briefly at driving and side saddle I believe. Hunting wasn't a success, too stressy.

Hope the viewing goes well

I know of one British one... absolute baggage. She was thoroughly obnoxious, had to be cross-tied for all handling and getting her to the field in the morning was a team effort involving hats and body protectors for all. She was completely irrational, some days she'd spook half way across the yard and run back to her stable and nothing would persuade her to come back out - other days she'd refuse to go into the stable at all.

Her owner was scared of her, she was rarely ridden and never had any kind of discipline which can't have helped but I think she'd have always been difficult even with the right owner.

I have 4 trakehners!! Not sure how that happened.

On the plus side they all have lovely natures in the stable. Love them and all talented, (if u can get them on ur side) but definately competition horses not your general riding club horse IMO. Definate case of Tricky Trakehner!

My mare is a Westphalian but by a Trakehner with Trak blood on her dams line aswell...
She's stunning, sweet as sugar, massively responsive, super intelledent but she has had minor lameness which have taken forvever to heal and she's definately a jekyll and hyde character...
I had a 7yr old learn to rising trot on her over the summer on a lead rein but she also gets very stressed and she's got some buck in her!

Basically, she is far too clever for her own good and most definately highly strung but i love her to pieces as she's so rewarding even if she is aloof.
She's a terror out of work, but in regular work she's 90% angelic, 10% sharp as hell.

Well they are addicitve, so be warned, if you have 1 you'll probably end up with 2!

They are the ferraris of the sporthorse world. Intelligent and athletic. There are one or two lines that are more pros horses (as there are in any breed) but on the whole they have been selectively bred for centuries to be riding horses, so ridability is a key attribute. They are also known for their toughness, as most of the base stock is descended from horses that survived the great trek.

They are also very people orientated and dont suffer fools, so if you are the type of rider who cranks in one end and beats the other, they are not the horse for you. If you want a partner for life, who is tough, clever, and will give you 110%, then go for it. if you like TBs you will love Trakehners!

PS I have British and German breds - no difference. All the British bred ones are directly descended from German stock anyway

HI Volatis. Just wandering which lines are more for professionals. Just out of interest as I think one or 2 of mine fit that catergory, hence out with professional jockeys! Both from same line.

Joy! thats who i put my trak mare too. Hes a nice 2 yo but think he will be sharp. Have 1 by Sir Graditz thats not easy, inter graditz lines but talented. Have a soft spot for them, not sure why as all stress heads.

Hi - I have German bred Trakehner. He is the most beautiful horse I have ever ridden - his trot floats and his canter is a dream. He is very intelligent, very laid back and a geuinely lovely man!
I certainly wasn't looking for a Trakehner when I was horse hunting but I wanted something I could hack out on my own safely, do a bit of dressage without the hassle of having a bad loader!
Jerry ticked ALL the boxes so you can tell I'm now a trakehner fan!

I have a soft spot for Sir Graditz actually, but dont know much about his offspring as not many of them around. What is your mare's breeding that you put to Opposition?
If it makes you feel better I also know of Opposition babies that have made lovely amateur event horses, still pure bred Trakehners, but bred by Opposition's breeder, so she knew exactly the type of mare to breed to him.
