My poor horsey is still on box rest, he has been having Sedalin to chill him out on stressy days, but my vet suggested using a herbal calmer that includes Valerian. I have searched the internet and found one called Tranquil E, just wondered if anyone has used it or if you know of any other products containing Valerian that may be useful??
Thanks!
Will put this in stable yard too as not sure what section it should be in!!

How about using valerian on its own?

My mare used to be on it... the wife of my feed merchant is a herbalist, and she did some up for me to a perfect concentrate for Han and it worked an absolute miracle! You can't use it under FEI rules, but while your horse is on box rest I highly recommend it.

When Grace starts coming back into work, it is definitely something I will be using (along with Sedalin

Ohhh OK then but how do I go about getting it? and in what dosage?? Do you put it in the feed? My horse is getting wise to the Sedalin syringe, although it's not too bad at the moment, I can cope with it but he is objecting more and more, don't blame him poor thing! Won't ever be competing under any rules, not in that legue! so that's not a problem!!

I got mine from the herbalist... I could always give you her number and you could look into having it sent via the post??? She is married to my feed merchant, and a registered herbalist.

I put it in the feed... and I cannot remember the dosage but it came in a big bottle which lasted well over a month. You have an initial loading period (from what I can remember) and then a maintenance level which can be increased if you need it.

Ok do you want to PM me the details?? It would be good to talk to someone knowledgeable and get ideas on dosage an exactly what effect it has! Thanks!

No problem... let me double check with the feed merchant this week and then I will PM you his wife's number and you can phone her and have a chat

I'm in the same position, horse been on box rest since Christmas. I have been using sedalin when needed but my vet suggested trying the Topspec calmer and have to say it is amazing stuff and has worked an absolute treat. She has not needed any sedalin since and is so much more calm and relaxed, can't recommend it enough.

Tried that! went through 2 tubs did nothing!!

I had previously tried straight magnesium before his box rest as he can be really spooky and that didn't seem to have any effect at all, but my YO uses it on her mare and it works! I have since read on this forum that magnesium based products seem to work better with mares, prob a trial and error thing but it does get a tad expensive trying all this stuff!

As the vet has suggested Valarian thought I would give it a go! BTW he doesn't seem to need Sedalin every day now as I think he is finally resigned to the fact that he's not coming out the stable but he has managed to smash his light and kick out the back of his stable in the last 8 weeks as well as trying to buck and rear and squeel, not funny when I am in stable with him!! But on windy days or when there's things going on at the yard or near by, like the gardeners in neighbouring gardens chopping down trees (DOH) then he gets het up!

BUT when he has to come out I think I will need all the sedatives going and some!!!
