Im in the UK. Our horse we bought in the UK has an Irish passport. I am unfamiliar with what a passport no./ chip no. is ( because when I last had a horse it was before passports were mandatory )

Is the identification number the same as the chip number?

When we did a health check ( not a starred one) the vet found he was chipped but that number was not in the passport but there is an Identification number. i.e. they dont match if they are supposed to? or the chip number is not recorded in the book.

The Irish horse board said to get a vet to do another description page as his markings when he was 4 yrs old have obviously changed as he is a grey Irish breed :)

The vet I got today to look at description said it is " probably " the same horse LOL.. all his whirls match although there are few others that were not noted down, and his feet that are 2 black and 2 white are written down in the opposites sides correspondingly ( so that may be human error)

Neither vet has been too worried as both are familiar with how things are done over there ( this second vet actually knows the breeders of this horse!) … so I just need to know ( as he didn't ) do we send this white passport to the Irish board or the UK now he resides in the UK?

I know I can get a DNA test done to verify him completely ( which may be helpful if we ever sell him on?) I have no idea how expensive that is?

Anyway - If anyone can help clear up if the identification number is the chip also - or a different one? thanks!

On first reading it does sounds as though it is not your horses passport tbh.

As far as I am aware you need to send the passport for change with the original passport issuer.

If it were me I would do some more digging, I would certainly want the correct chip number in the passport.

As you say, if you get it sorted now it won't cause you a problem if you choose to sell.

on talking to a lot of people it is NO surprise that this may not be his passport. One vet said she regularly goes to Ireland and she has told me of a story where there was a room Full of passports and they could be matched up with a horse LOL ! so…. I am not freaking out about it…

so, Is the passport number and the chip number one and the same thing?….

The identification number is not the same as the microchip number, the chip may have been done more recently and not put in the passport as presumably he is not registered with full breeding known, if registered ISH he would have been DNA verified as a youngster and microchipped before the passport was issued, if you know his breeding it may be of some value to apply for a full passport but will probably cost more than it is worth.

I don't see why they should want a new description issued, all greys get lighter and, darker points or dappling is not noted anyway otherwise many greys would need a new one almost every year, many have brown as their colour if done before greying out starts, if you can track down who put in the microchip or find the owners at that time they may still have the paperwork to go with it, I have had several with separate papers for chips, freezebrands etc and sometimes they get separated from the passport.

I've recently purchased a horse with a Irish passport and returned it to them to get it changed. If you google them it takes you to a site where there is form to complete and the price. It came back after about a week. I'm in the Channel Islands.
