I am getting my new pony picked up by a local transport company this weekend. Pony is 120 miles away...it's a good 2 and a half hour drive in the car.

I have left a deposit for the pony but still need to pay the rest when I collect him. So, my question is, do I drive up there myself just to hand over the money or do I give the money to the guy who is doing the transport to hand over, while I sit at home clock-watching and waiting for ponio to arrive?

Bear in mind the transporter is a reputable local firm, everybody on the yard knows and uses them and they have transported a horse for me in the past and have always been very good. But would you trust someone with what (to me anyway) is a fairly large amount of money?

Thank you for reading this....I'm such a worrier!

Yes I would give the transporter the cash, and ask him to inspect the pony for you (quick check over that all is in order, sound etc). Sure he wont mind doing this for you, before he hands over your cash.

Let the people know what is happening, so on receipt of cash, pony is loaded.

The transporter will get your receipt and all you have to do is wait for pony to be delivered. Or alternatively, ask the transporter if you can come along for the ride, drive to his place and travel from there, where you can pick your car up when you have sorted out pony.

This way, you can make a final check over of the pony yourself, see how it loads and should there be any problems, you are still holding the cash and the bargining power.

I would deal in cash, because of the reasons I have given above.

As for the honesty of the transporter, he will have his entire business rep at stake and would not do anything un-toward for a few hundred quid (or maybe more).

The larger, more reputable transporters would be used to handling cash for clients, so i would have no problem giving cash to them to pay for the pony - once you are sure they are reputable. Best thing is to speak to the owner of the firm, is they are happy for their driver to handle cash then go ahead. I have done this numerous times with the transporter i use.

I had to use a transporter to fetch my horse back from the vet hospital as I was out of the country. My sister gave him the cash to settle the vets bill. He was a reputable transporter and got all the receipts etc for insurance purposes. I would have no worries doing it again.

Is there no way you can travel with the transporter to get your pony?

The transporter may hand over the cash & get a receipt for you, I would if I was driving but I would not give the pony the once over for you...that is down to you to check that. That's a big responsibility & I wouldn't get involved in that at all.

Travel with the transporter is you can...save your own juice.
