I posted on a group on FB if anyone knew any companies where a driver picks you up and takes you to your show, waits and then brings you home. A lady said for me to try said company who will remain anonymous. I contacted the lady, who was very polite and willing to help, she informed me that she could take us in her trailer for £50 or in her box for £70. This is roughly 50% of what other companies in our area charge so I was a tad suspicious. I asked her if she was insured/had a DEFRA Licence, as I couldn't see any mention of this on her FB Page, nor her website.
Suddenly this lady became "very offended" that I would ask such a question - OF COURSE she was insured!!! I apologised and said that if she could kindly send me her details so I could check, as I value my horses safety, she told me she was offended at that I'd have to find someone else to take me to the show. She said that I was an immature little girl and didn't know what I was talking about. (I'm 21, but look about 17/18)

Now I'm stuck for transport and the competition is a week today!

Her reaction sparks me to think that she wasn't licenced, and needed to get me off her back. Should I call DEFRA to see if she's registered, and if not report her?

Deep breath and move on and good luck at the show if you get there. I do hope you manage to find transport.

shes obviously not but ide just forget it and move on. Lots of people offer similar service in their spare time just to help cover costs, personally dont see it as being any different to going with a freind in their trailer. As long as she isnt using this as her sole income/ running as a propper business and advertising as being registered with defra

She advertises as a mobile tack shop and transport, and set up the business after being made redundant. I'd class that as sole income? I don't know what to do, I can't bare the thought of someone else's horse getting injured and not having a foot to stand on because she wasn't insured/licensed

Sole income or not, if she's using her transport for hire or reward, she isn't insured if she hits other drivers or causes an accident and that's disregarding the horse element. IMO that's not the same as going with a friend to a show, as they aren't using it for hire or reward.

Well done for being so astute as to ask the relevant questions, but like others have said, leave it and look else where.

I always surprised at the state of transport that many people use for their own horses, if morally you felt you should report this lady, then by the same token, you'd probably also have to report half of the lorries at the next show you go to.
Defra would be very busy.

Hmmmmm, seems like she is the kind to help folks out but obviously isnt going to do it for free, they say a first class walk is better than a second class ride.

She would need an Operator's Licence, appropriate road fund licence and commercial insurance, plus the relevant competency certificates. So if she's cheap she probably isn't kosher, and if you don't want to risk it then don't use her.

This. It's not a DEFRA thing but an insurance one and a VOSA operator licence one. Her reaction would suggest she has neither. her situation is not classed as the same as giving a lift to a friend where they help with fuel costs as you are taking their horse with yours.

Personally I would just go with someone charging the appropriate rate (which will never be cheap) and who is able to show you proper insurance and competency certs.
