Does anyone know the approximate cost of transporting a horse from Edinburgh to London? I am hoping to see a horse there and if I like it will obviously need to bring him home - but need to know how much to budget! Many thanks

Think it depends on a lot of stuff, eg can you get on a shared loads etc, or would it be cheaper to do self-drive hire, or hiring a lorry + driver.
Know that most of the places round here charge about £1 a mile to do an individual journey ie not shared load.
Not sure if thats any help!

I would budget around £400/£450. I paid £230 as a part share from Manchester to Bristol with a very good transporter.

try one of these....

all are legal transporters, with relevant insurance and licences.

if you go with a company that doesn't have an Operators Licence or a WIT (welfare in transit) cert. then you are likely to endanger the welfare of your horse.

also try and keep away from well-meaning friends who may "offer to do it for you".
insurance can also be an issue here.

I would try and tie it in with the deal, see if the sellers will chuck in the transport. Put it across to them, that it is vital that the horse travels well, pay a deposit and say you will pay the balance in cash upon delivery. That way if the horse throws a wobble or gets injured he is still their responsiblity for the journey and if you unload a mad monster, you can keep your money.

I had a bargain travelling my horse 500 miles from Inverness to Mid Wales and it was £250!

(8 years ago) Shared load, horse came off the lorry in one piece and unstressed. Took three days to get here though. He's on Horse transport web site

Gordon Hamilton Horse Transport. Tel: 01771 637870
He's based in Aberdeen but travels the country.

It depends what you want! A shared load is simply that 20-30 other horses would be picked up and dropped off along the way-hence why your price is cheaper.

There is no legal requirement for the transporter to check for which horse is vaccinated! So your shared load means shared germs!

An individual load is just that-you also should be able to travel with your horse! I would expect to pay £1000 for individual load.

We use julie magnus everytime whether national or international. www.jmrt.co.uk

Agree with RHT here! Those two sites are very good and all licences have been checked before being allowed to advertise on those sites.

Agree also with K that there is a big difference with shared and individual!

Look carefully at the prices and the services offered in your reply email

how long is your horses journey (legal requirement for the transporter to tell you)
booking forms
terms and conditions
can you travel with your horse
can your equipment including yard equipment travel
can you pay by credit card so you are protected

Chose wisely! After all you cannot replace your best friend!
