Heard half a report on radio while driving home about a law coming in that will oblige you to take an exam to transport livestock. Any one know anything about this? The example they gave was people who kept rare breed chickens as a hobby so no idea whether it would apply to horses.

My father in law who is a farmer told me about this at the weekend apparently everybody who transports animals whether they are their own or not,if they are intending to ever travel them further than 4o miles you have to now take a test!!! I think its DEFRA!! Things like a ramp can only be so steep!!!

Yes, new requirement for people who are paid to transport horses eg grooms, hauliers etc (I think). My farrier was taking his exam a few weeks ago but I haven't seen him to see how he got on! I think H+H did an article recently about it. If you just transport your own horses it does not apply.

There is so much scaremongering going on - I actually saw an ad at a show centre the other day which made no mention of the fact that it was only if you were commercial - that kid of money-grabbing makes me sick (they were selling the training to get the certificate).

Thanks spotted cat and hornby. That makes it clear. That was why i was asking - as i wanted to find out facts before panicking about it. Let's hope it helps stamp out this transporting horses across Europe for meat.
