Now I have horse with me on DIY I'm really impatient to get going places!!! Here is the situation.

My and OH both have basic car license and have no friends/family nearby with anything better.

Mum and dad have a decent 7 1/2 ton wagon which is off the road at the moment (no fault of it's own) but while it's been sat for a year and a half some of the horse bit has gone rotten so as well as MOT etc. it needs a decent amount of work doing on it before horses can go in. HOWEVER, sounds like I can have it most of the time (nice mum and dad!!) but would obv have to take my test OR they might consider selling it and getting a 3 1/2 tonner, but only when it's ready (which I'm thinking will be a while away.. 60 yo dad doing work).

OH has big car which could do short trips and borrow YO trailer but would be a bit illegal...

Or I'm still thinking it would just be easier to sell my car and get a 4x4 and trailer (but would still need to pass test!!)

Why did they have to bring the stupid new rule in after 1998!!!!

After writing it down I think I need to be patient and wait for mum and dads wagon and then either pass lorry test or sell it and get a little one...

What do you guys think?? Sorry for rambling!!!

Can you do that? Where from? Do you know roughly how much it costs?

Oh and as you know the area ;) do you think it's ridable from breach manor to Eland Lodge? I don't really understand how to get over the A50. :(

You and me both! If I could drive a 7.5ton life would be soo much more straightforward.

I had a little 3.5ton for a couple of years and I loved it but it is expensive as you've got to pay tax, insurance, MOT etc before you've even gone anywhere.

I'm currently looking for a job closer to home to make it more economical to have a 4x4 as my everyday car and then use that to tow a trailer.

Slightly concerned that I won't be able to pass my trailer test but OH is a much better driver than me so might make him sit it!

I'm not sure about local horsebox hire, I seem to remember there was one or two, but don't have the details, sorry. It normally cost about £70 or so for a day.
as to hacking to Eland... you would have to go to Sudbury roundabout and take your life into your hands;)
no, wait, that's rubbish! you go parallel to the A50, through Foston village towards Dove Valley, cross over the bridge there and head for Scropton, then it's easy enough after... It's a bit far though, isn't it?

Thanks guys. I looked at the one in Barton, they just have an email address so may be worth contacting.. but TBH I'm not sure I can stomach forking out 90 - 110 a day... (what the others I've seen are).

TBH I think I'd be more likely to pass lorry test than trailer test... I've never even tried but it looks hard!! OH reckons he could though.

If we ended up with a 3 1/2 ton one I think my dad would help me a little bit with running costs, well maybe. :P

Well, I'm a nosy cow so I had a look at google maps and it doesn't look that bad a route really... Is he good in traffic? Cause the Draycott road is fairly busy...
I'll have a look if you could avoid it;)

Yep, you could avoid A515:), just cross it at six lane ends...
So, over the A50 at Dove Valley, through Hatton to Tutbury, right towards Cotton in the Clay, left to hanbury and right toward Eland - easy peasy:D:D
