hello, I want to transport horses for money as a small business does anyone know how much the insurance would be? who the best insurance companies are? and anything else that might help. I have my hgv and in the process of doing my cpc. Thank you

Not sure as to what insurance you are asking about so, to cover all bases. The vehicle needs to be insured for hire and reward. You will need your relevant insurances for running any small business, public / employers liability etc and most transporters will have care custody and controll insurance. At no point are the horses actually insured by you and you must advertise this on every level. If running an HGV you will also need an operators licence with all it's conditions. To give you an idea just my insurances are about £1K per month.

Thank you I knew it was expensive but blimey do you do it on a big scale, is an operators licence not the same as a cpc? basically want to do hunt horses and take people to and from competitions, plus any moving of horses but on a small scale really there seems to be a gapin the market where I live for taking people to comps waiting and bringing them back and that's what I had hoped to do with the normal transporting as and when any advice gratefully received.

Unfortunately that is the reason for the gap in the market. Operator licence is a must for every one and, every one must jump through same hoops to get it. So unfortunately unless you are doing a lot of mileage or charging a lot for waiting time it does not pay. The ice cream vans have pretty much destroyed the industry as they are not regulated at all.

just to get that is expensive. I thought the cpc was that but clearly not. everythings so complicated. thank you though! I would have to do it on a big scale if I was to make it work wouldn't I?

The driver cpc which I presume you are referring to ( as a new qualified licence holder) is absolutely nothing to do with an operators licence. The costs of getting an operators licence are quite hi in that you have to advertise where you want to park, you must have a transport manager who holds a CPC ( not the new driver one!) £8,200 available at all times to cover the first vehicle. A periodic matenance inspection (PMI) every six weeks. The list goes on.

You only need an operators licence if your horsebox is 4 to ones or over, which is why most horse transport companies operate a 3.5t or 3.9t to make the whole business viable.

I run a successful horse transport company so feel free to pm if you have any questions. You can make it work, me and many others have proved this :)

If you are running 3.9 tonne vehicles as a business without an operators licence your success will be short lived if vosa catch up with you. Any vehicle over 3.5 tonne if run as part of a commercial business needs to be run on an operators licence. Who ever told you it was 4 tonnes was a very good salesman. A simple google search will back me up. The vosa guidelines are the second on the page.
