You passed in an automatic after 1997 5 or 6 years ago (therefore need to take further tests to drive any manual/to tow/drive anything over 3.5 tonnes laden) would you....

Buy automatic Discovery for about 7K (on a Y plate) then add a second hand Ifor (year old) for 3K.

We've just done that - works brilliantly and dead easy to drive - can even reverse it after only four weeks of owning it!
 
See, I'm not even worried about driving towing (although I'm sure I will not feel fantastically confident driving ANY of the options to start with) but I DO worry about horse freaking out/falling and all the trailers look so flimsy...

I would throw myself on the floor in frustration!
(Although it is the automatic thing that threw me - I have a manual license and drove an automatic for the first time last year! OMG!! - it kept driving off without me . . . sooo scary!)
 
Absolutely, gives me LOADS more options but I am comfortable driving autos and would never want a manual as my day to day car now hence I would passing test just to drive a box hence wouldn't feel comfortable.

Unless I force myself to have manual car too...
 
lol! I HONESTLY don't understand why anyone would want to drive with a clutch. Why bother? Most autos have gears if you need them too.

But then I'm a drive to get places person rather than a drive for fun person (and still don't get where the fun is?) lmao!
 
I CHOOSE to drive autos over here - I drive manuals in Spain but over here no WAY - just doesn't come naturally to me to change gear with my left hand

I looked into Auto boxes and went with the Auto 4x4 and trailer instead - have heard not great things about Auto boxes and pulling up hills etc.
 
Ahh - you see I love driving. I love telling the car when to change gear all the time! The Power! Mwahahahahahaha

I don't think any trailer is any less sturdy than a box, particularly a van conversion. It is cheaper to tax, ensure and test only one vehicle, and a box that stands around invariably lets you down just when you least need it to! We tow an Ifor with a (unreliable 03 reg

I was slightly worried about the auto 4x4 and towing and I have a manual license so could've got a manual.

But I wouldn't change now - I think it gives a MUCH smoother ride when towing and I've got the 510 Ifor too so it's a decent weight to pull.

I was soooooooooo nervous before I made the final decision but then my OH just went out and bought it and now I don't want a lorry.
 
well mum tows with an auto no problem.

However she has a full pre1997 liscence. and i have a manual licence so i am about to take my HGV test as ive got both a lorry and a trailer as well as a lorry and having tried both in the field i cant get the trailer to do anything at all backwards where as i can put the lorry where ever i want it both forwards and backwards.

Have you thought about a 2nd hand equitrek? I absolutely love my 4*, it is so stable when being pulled (I have even gone a bit too fast in it because sort of forgot I had it on the back

) and are really roomy inside for the horses. I also like it because it faces backwards.

I would never ever swap it for a 3.5 tonne box (I was thinking of getting one of these rather than doing my trailer test) but decided I would feel happier pulling the trailer and sat the test. It honestly was not too bad

i cant seem to ubderstand why anyone in their right mind would take a trailer test..

take an lgv, and then have a good pick of whats out there.

those "burger van" set-ups seem overpriced and overrated to me!!
 
Unless you're planning on using any transport you buy a lot I'd just hire a lorry with a driver when I needed one!

See the thread on lorries and dodgy garages for exactly why buying anything bigger than a burger van scares me witless. I can get a burger van serviced and MOTd at my local garage by people who're dealing with them every day and who aren't going to rip me off because I know where they live...

E (who's going for a burger van OR an equi-trek and hasn't made her mind up yet)
 
I went through the trailer or box debate when buying a car. I ended up with a Shogun to pull the Ifor 505 I already had (would have had to sell if buying a box) and I am very happy with it. Perfect for what we do - which is local showing and lessons.
