now we have got daughter a pony and just joined local pony club i can see next thing will be transport. in short term can hack to local rallies but not sure what would be best and most sensible option. work as community nurse so to have a big car or 4wd to pull a trailer seems expensive or look for small old 2 horse transit box. also what cars are best to tow that arent huge, read on here rav 4 and freelander arent big enough its all so confusing.any thoughts

i have an 3.1 isuzu trooper short wheel base. it is big enough to tow 2 horses in an ifor 510.
i'm only 5ft 4 and so didnt want a BIG car - the short wheel base is great. i use it at work too and its fine to park (even when I was parking in London residential streets).

Yes - you might be able to do it - but you would be illegal - and if the police pulled you up you would be in real trouble. And perhaps more to the point if anything went wrong your car would not have the power to pull you out of it.

Why would it be illegal? When we were towing the weights etc were checked and they were just within the limits. (just curious)

Well I don't think it would be within limits - not with a VW Golf.

I tow an Ifor 505 with a BMW 320d (company car) with one pony. Towing weight 1800, trailer 950kg and pony 350kg. So well within weight - but I can tell you not comfortable. I am looking to buy a 4 x 4 just for towing. You might just get away with it with a freelander - but I understand it's towing weight is quite low - someone else will know better than me though.

Have looked into the freelander and that is within the limits, thanks for the advice, will look in to the golf thing, was a few years ago and not really relevant now as i do my own towing, but will look out of interest!!

Depends on the trailer some companies do make a light weight 1 pony trailer designed to be towed by a family car

Richardson Supreme rosette
The Rosette is a very attractive, lightweight trailer that uses modern materials to combine a stylish design with a durable finish. The Rosette is designed to appeal to owners who want to tow a lightweight trailer with the family car.

Bought Land Rover Discovery last year to tow trailer as can tow 3.5 tons in total I believe, this is car, trailer and 2 large horses. The sales guys at Land Rover told me the freelander isn't suitable to tow horses and trailer, isn't built to cope with that kind of load and to be honest I would rather be safe than sorry. Even if I could get away with towing with a smaller car I just wouldn't put my horse at risk. Sorry to be so blunt but we spend so much time and effort looking after their wellbeing why be daft enough to tow with something that isn't up to the job, it is plain irresponsible. You can buy an old reliable discovery that is still up to the job for £3-4k, that is what they were built for.

By the way, police are now seriously on the lookout for any vehicle towing overweight loads, I know so many people that have been stopped, apparently you have to include the weight of your car aswell as the trailer and load and kit which puts lots of people over the limit and they end up with a fine!
