Gillies are probably the biggest Scottish company. They have a fleet of (very nice!) lorries who I believe travel everywhere (including Europe). They are based I think at Kelso. Website: http://www.ericgillie.co.uk/
I have used them before. Wasn't terribly impressed with one horse arriving to me a few years ago as horse had apparently been "tough" to load and ended up coming off the lorry at mine with a very bad knock to his leg (still scarred to this day!) and it took them AGES to get to me - it should have been a 3 hour journey but took ALL day. All day is a long time when they dont give hay on the journey... However, generally they are very good - sent a horse off to England with them a few months ago with no problems (they stabled him overnight half way down etc.). Cost totally depends on how many other horses they have booked in etc. Note that the woman on the phone can be quite harsh...!
Have used Gillies before and very true about the woman on the phone!! A real funny one thats for sure. Quiet rude really.
Gillies are good though I didnt know they went to Ireland - any other recommendations please
I have just bought a horse from Ireland and Mullins brought him to the UK for me. They were very, very efficient and friendly and treated the horse beautifully. The handlers/drivers were both women.
He travelled on from England to me in France and was traveled with Equine Travel Agency. They were fantastic too and the horse stepped off the lorry as though he had been in there for 10 minutes not a couple of days. Again both the handlers/drivers were women.
I was very happy with the service they provided and price that they charged.
I used Gillies to transport our young clydesdale from Scotland to Essex and they were fantastic. They came very high recommended by many H&H and other forum users when I asked for recommendations.
I had no problems with poor manners, to me they were great. They answered all my questions and when I rang several times over the travel period, gave me updates as to how she was. They took her at very short notice and their cost was very reasonable, cheaper than if I had done it myself.
The driver was lovely. Called the night before to say she had travelled fine to the next stop and then one hour before she was due to arrive, called me again to let me know his ETA.
When she arrived she came off the lorry looking like she had only been a few miles. No signs of sweat, stress etc. The driver handled her beautifully, though did say how good and easy she was to deal with. The lorry was a top of the range Oakley and in excellent condition.
