Does anyone know of a transporter who could transport a foal of around 7/8 months in January from Co.sligo over to the UK?

Would ideally need picking up and dropping off in same day/night. None of this picking up a couple of days before hand and being taken to transports yard before being loaded back up, for yet another journey.

Would rather spend a bit more and get a decent transporter, than a bargain and get what I paid for

Thanks in advance

Try http://cooperhorses.com/about

They do a lot of Newmarket/Ireland bloodstock work so should be experienced with travelling and handling foals

We've used them and been delighted with the service and the lorries are impressive.

I have never shipped a foal so can't advise but it would seem a long trip for a foal from Sligo to the UK without a rest

There is no way under transport regs that any recognised transporter of horses would make this in 1 trip as its against transport of horses regulations.
The yearling will have to come off for a rest break, the driver will have to stop.
Why do you not want to follow best practice OP?

Eric Gillies are brilliant, always put the horse first. If the foal is going miles from a port on the UK side, I doubt they would do it in one trip, nor should they!

Thankyou for the replies. I obviously have misunderstood just how far from sligo to the UK is. So obviously understand if a stop is needed then a stop will have to happen.

I'm one of them people, who just does not have bearings of were I am or were I am going.

So to edit what I have just asked. A transporter, appropriate, to dealing with foals and stops needed :)

Spacefaer I will look at them tommorow and give them a ring.

Should add I'm only a couple of miles from the port, but do understand that sligo is quite far on the irish side. Will also look into these guys too, thankyou

It is well doable without taking the foal off of the truck or breaking any drivers hours or welfare regulations. Your only problem is Co.Sligo is off of the beaten transporter track! If you are doing it as a private load the foal would go directly so no 3 laps of Ireland collecting the shares!
I regularly collect as far south as Cork and run home to West Sussex without breaking any welfare or drivers hours rules!

Hi Mutely, I must beg to differ I'm afraid. This simply isn't doable - My other half and I transport horses for a living as well as driving trucks for agencies etc. The hours are VERY stringent, you cannot do that journey without taking relevant breaks. Also it is worth noting that while I was driving the other day, I went 3 minutes over my maximum hour whilst trying to find a layby, when I submitted my tacho readings I got landed with a £100 fine for just a 3 minute breach. Please do check!

Ever considered the trucks might be double(multi) maned?

it was this sentence that made me think otherwise ... If it was us doing it we'd definitely have a half way stop somewhere for a drink (for the horse) and a leg stretch.

Another 100% vote for Eric Gillie.

There's a thank you on their FB page from someone who recently had a you filly transported from Ireland by them

DEFRA regulations are 24 hours travelling then will need to come off as long as food and water been fed every 8 hours

Drivers doubled manned can drive 20 hours if both taking a 10 hour day each, so with the ferry at 4 hours this is quite feasible

We use Julie Magnus and she does all our ireland trips in one when picking up and has another driver with her and brings over our babies to our door no problem

Would not use anyone else

She advertises in HH and her website is www.jmrt.co.uk

C&C horse transport (based North Yorkshire I think) regularly bring horses of all shapes and sizes from the South and west of Ireland to the North of the UK in 24 hours. As has been said they are doubly manned and all horses including young foals and weanlings that have gone from or come to here have travelled beautifully and come off the lorry as if they'd had a 15 min drive down the road. Couldn't recommend them highly enough and as for patience when loading, you'd never guess they had a ferry to catch, always great to watch the Pros in action.

Sligo is on the north west coast of Ireland with the ports being on the east/south east side of Ireland, that's the issue. And trust me, from someone who's driven in a car from Dublin port to Sligo, it's a long way and the boat journey is another long time added on so it wouldn't be feasible, kind or legal to do it all in one day.

I'd recommend Gillies, they brought my horse down from Scotland to Leicestershire. Picked he up on the Friday and he stayed at their yard for the weekend with no issues then arrived on Monday evening - calm, well fed and well looked after. 100% recommend them.

Thankyou everyone who commented. I phoned gilles today and they have recommended someone a bit closer, she will be picked up and stabled over night and then catch the ferry next day.

Just a long wait till January now :)
