So we are picking up my sons new pony on Sunday in our trailer ( a Richardson Treble) but as the pony is only 10.2 he can get under the breast bar. I was considering travelling him loose (or would you cross tie) and obviously without partitions. There will be shavings down and he will have a hay net as its a 2.5 hr trip.

Any ideas? I've never transported anything this small before!

:)

I would travel him loose. He'll be so light that any movement he does during the journey shouldn't have any effect on the stability of the trailer. I bought a feral 10 month old colt and travelled him loose in my Ifor 505 and didn't even feel him during the journey home.
I'm not familiar with your model of trailer but I've had an extra set of attachments put lower down in my trailer so he now travels "normally" with suitable height breast and bum bar, maybe something you could think of for the future?

When we had to travel our 9.2hh in a massive Ifor trailer we removed the front breach bar, cross tied and also put stacked strawbales in front of him, worked a treat and he travelled like a dream :)

We always travel foals loose with nothing (partitions, etc.) inside the trailer (except bedding, of course). But close the top doors, front and rear!

Loose. You can stack hay/straw under the breast bar to stop him nipping under.

Ooo that's sound like a plan!

We are picking him up tomorrow now so will try with shavings bales as that's all I have!!

We are possibly looking to sell our trailer and get a 7.5t lorry and don't really want to make any permanent changes to the trailer if you know what I mean, it might not appeal to some when it comes to selling!

Thanks for the replies :)

I used to travel my shetland backwards. I'd walk him up front ramp with the back ramp up and tie him up there. Nowhere for him to go then!

At least he won't be able to eat a shavings bale! If you're giving him hay, I'd just pile it loose in the corner. Safer then trying to hang a net for him.

I asked a similar question a while ago, and didn't get very much of a response.

I'd watched "adam's farm" on Countryfile, and he was transporting two or three small ponies loose in his box, which is not a problem, however to me I wondered if it was dangerous, mainly due to no protection for the box from breaching bars. Ie even if a small pony was thrown at the back of your trailer, would the trailer ramp fastenings hold it in.

I know on mine they wouldn't.

Thanks all for the replies!

WE left the breast bar in and put 2 bales of shavings underneath and then 2 in front of them so they didn't slide. I put a fair amount of bedding down (shavings) and tied the haynet to the breast bar hooks as anywhere else was too high! We had to tie him up in the end as the first thing he tried to do was scoot under the breast bar the little monkey :) once he was tied up he was fine. Travelled like a dream and had a wee and a poo.
Got home and took him straight to the field, he met my horse who thought he was quite interesting then put him in his field and his neighbour ran away , so funny!

Anyway, it looks like we are keeping the trailer for the time being so will be adapting it to fit him in comfortably :)

Thanks for the ideas!!! :D
