Ok a certain 6 month old girl is severely lacking in car manners which is how she sprained her shoulder. At present we've got an estate (parents) and a hatchback (mine). Jack's fine and doesn't jump out until invited to but madam just gets over excited and jumps out if there's not a second person to have hold of her from the back seat.

We are working on it training-wise and it's getting better and I'm sure in time she'll be as good as Jack but she's made me think about getting some kind of box for in the car for them. In an ideal world I'd want something I could transfer between the two cars (both the same make and model just different ages/styles) but I'll admit to knowing absolutely nothing about them so any help/advice greatly received.
 
Just get a wee crate, collapsible metal or plastic? Most people I know travel their pups in crates in the boot or on the backseat. And some adult dogs too. Much cheaper than a custom made box and as long as they can stand up and turn around, they'll be fine.
I agree you are right to be cautious, I hate seeing pups jump in and out of the car, it can store up joint trouble for later life, a lot of impact on wee elbows.

I have also taught mine the 'wait' command for the car. I will pop the boot and tell them to wait, the can only jump out when I say 'OK'. The longer they wait, the bigger treat.

Easily practisable in the yard!
 
Why not use a bench chain in the back of the car?
I have one permanently in mine and it saves any risk of a dog doing a runner when the boot is opened.
 
I have a carrier for my terrier. It's like one of the cat carriers, but bigger. It's lightweight, she can't see out too much so reduces travel sickness / anxiety etc. You can buy them on ebay / pets at home etc. I wouldn't be without mine as I use it for vets visits etc.
 
Jack already knows wait and she is fine in the house etc but we're working on it in the car still. Might well look into a smaller crate (Jack's old fabric one is slightly bigger than the ones they have in the house). They're both too small to jump in and out so I (well mum atm ;) ) lifts them in and out unless we're crafty and park somewhere with mum's estate so the ground is higher where the boot is.

Only thing I'm a bit worried about is a crate moving a bit when we're travelling....or am I being daft? :o

Use a bungee cord thing or you can get proper ties for them.
