Poor Lottie last night was very traumatised. On the lunge she was going crazy and being a neurotic mare. Then I decided to calm her down by walking her in hand around the 10min block (quite lane and bridleway). She is normally a saint but has always been wary of dogs and shotuing/ running people. Well we were happily minding our own business about to cross a bridge over a stream when 2 alsations came haring round a corner towards us, Lotti proceeds to rear and then run backwards quickly. This was then followed by screaming owners trying to chase them from attacking Lottie. Which to be frank made matters worse. She was petrified, took me ages to calm her, then everytime she heard a dog bark she tensed. Would not settle once back in the yard and only felt safe whilst in the stable. 1 thank god I was not on her back as I could have taken a dunking and 2 my horse that was already scared on dogs has now be traumatised and is going to be a nightmare to hack out for a while. Nanny needed and strong calmer I think?
Any idea on a good calmer to use, I did have her on Equifeast Cool, Calm and Collected however it took a long time to take effect and I need something a bit more instant now
 
Top Spec seems to be a very good calmer - but I'm sure a baby sitter would be better.

My new horse seems terrified of dogs too - so I entirely sympathise.
 
Amymay, ok thanks I may give them a call as she is a stress head anyway and could do with that edge being taken off her
 
Any chance of having some well behaved friendly dogs at the yard for her to see while she in in her stable? We have two black labs that are very good with the horses and the horses are very good with them in return, Frankie (horse) will let Rio (greedy lab) share his food! Might just help her to realise that not all dogs are a threat? Hacking out with a sensible nanny for a while would be my choice.

I use Equistro Equiliser which is a magnesium based calmer. Great for taking off the edge and allowing my boy to make rational decisions without loosing his sparkle in competition. Quick acting too.
 
I had a terrier try to attack my horse on Sunday whilst we were out on a hack, it was terrifying as I wasn't sure how Brads would react. Luckily the dog backed off when Brads put his ears back and went to bite it! The stupid owner didn't exactly try very hard to get her dog back though, and was very feebly calling it. She didn't even apologise!

We have dogs at the yard, and it has taken her a long time to trust these. She was wary of them last night but fingers crossed she soon settles.
