travel boots or bandages? discuss

Travel boots ... although i have thought of using bandages under boots but think legs may get to hot!!! ... I would NEVER travel with nothing after seeing my friends mare fall trough a trailer floor, broke both legs and were unsightly!!

You don't seriously think boots would have saved a horse breaking legs after going through the trailer floor - even if you put bandages under? Or maybe I'm misunderstanding and the boots would have prevented you seeing the damage?

what kind of pads do you use?

The other day one of the liveries used a set of polypads (velcro kind) with bandages over. That looked fairly secure as well as really cushioned. But I wonder if OTT? They'd at least be easy to wash.

No not at all, but it wouldn't have looked so unsighly and horrifying to see

Bandages for short trips, nothing for long. I was told by a long-distance hauler that they tend to stock up on long trips when bandaged.

Boots, i think they'd have more protection if he stood on himself (cover all leg from knee - just above hoof) bandags don't cover that much do they? boots are easier to put on too he does a silly walk though (lifts his back legs reaaally high) as if he's saying 'ARRRGGHH things on my legs i can't mooovve!' he does get used to them though

Neither. He just has over reach boots on and a tail bandage with tail guard over the top, plus poll guard. In winter I usually put a cooler/fleece on too as he would be fully clipped.

I don't understand the logic of that at all... you would use boots or bandages purely so that if your horse had an accident, it wouldn't look so bad to you? I'd rather see it all - at least then I know what I'm dealing with plus don't have to then find a way to get the bandages or boots off.

Hmmm Good point!! But tbh if it was my horse i still wouldnt have liked bones poking out and blood everywere!

Have voted 'boots' but am thinking of giving bandages a go. I'm not sure what my girl does in the trailer, but she gets her boots off the back and completely trashes them. Without them she cuts her legs on her shoes.

I know I shouldn't but I'm going in the trailer with her the next trip to see what it is she is doing.
