Is there anybody out there who is up for the trip of a lifetime to South America? My original companion has dropped out due to work commitments and as I'm hoping to leave in January, I'm panicking a bit! I'm hoping to spend 10 days riding across the Andes, dance the Samba at the Rio Carnival and perhaps do some voluntary work with horses in Uruguay. I'm expecting to be away for 3/4 months but am quite flexible on time, and apart from the Andes ride, am sticking to a tight budget! I don't mind if you are male or female, but as I'm only 19 this month I would rather you didn't already have your free bus pass. (BTW I'm a girl). I'm also hoping to fit in a few days at the races. I'm based in west wales, but don't mind travelling to meet.

How's your Spanish?

I travelled extensively across Lat Am when I was younger by myself and found that armed with good Spanish and very average Portuguese I was just fine. Nowadays I go there on business twice a year - also by myself - so not completely out of touch with how things are there.

PM me if you need any advice or recommendations. Sounds like the trip of a lifetime!

You need to put an ad in Wanderlust magazine, it is full of people wanting to buddy up for trips.

I hope you have a great time is sounds fabulous.

sounds amazing! would love to but a bit tied up with things atm to drop everything & go as much as i would love to! just about going on your own, it is a really scary idea but i travelled south africa on my own at the age of 20 (2 years ago) & really had a good time. you meet people as you travel so you are never really on your own, just not with the same people all the time. there are a few negatives for example there were a few evenings when i didnt have anyone to do anything with but i found that i was that shattered from everything i did during the day i found it easy enough just to sleep on these evenings anyway! on the positive side you get to do what you want, when you want & dont have to worry about pleasing everyone as it is your trip, you do what you want! i would definately travel on my own again if there was no one wanting to do the same trip as me. you meet people doing a similar thing & they quickly become friends for life.

have fun, i'm extremely jealous!

thanks for all your advice peeps, will certainly check out wanderlust. I'm learning spanish...it's hard! Those of you who can't afford to come, please rush out and buy a lottery ticket!!!

Hi, i recently traveled to Uruguay for 1 month alone and travelled round most of the country, the people are so friendly and safe, and im sure you would get on fine, I have contacts there, so if you needed any help, I could put you in touch, which part of the country are you going to?
its very horsey country and great fun, I had such an adventure, if you would like any info, PM me and I send you my email.
EJ:)

Wow, i'll be getting my lottery ticket, but its a bit short notice for me I'm afraid - had you said next summer I'd bite your hand off.

How much is it expected to cost?

Looking to do something like this next summer. Unfortunatly there is no way I could afford it by January! Hope you have a great time though!
