Hi guys,

Our 5 mth collie is a bad traveller. Is it just a case of keep travelling him and he'll get over it do you think? He is getting fractionally better - don't travel him that often at moment because of it and fact that he hates going in a vehicle. Druels (sp!!?) profusely as soon as he's in car/truck and is usually sick at some point! Is it best to travel on empty stomach or let him have some food?

Has anyone tried anything that helps and eventually cures this problem? Will he suffer for ever more?

It's a bummer really as we've got him for working the sheep!!! Once we've arrived at destination he does return to normal.

Thanks

Don't feed him before you travel.

Feed him in the car or let him sit in it without it moving, so that he associates it with positive things happening.

Keep him in a travel box or a crate with a sheet or blanket over it.

Take him for short pointless journies around the block or up and down a road, gradually lengthening the time.

Don't get yourself stressed about it as he will pick up on this.

He's travelled in foot well and could probably see out of window - just, and he's travelled on back seat/boot and either way doesn't seem to make any difference. Would you put him in a cage and cover it over so he can't see at all?

Thanks CC I posted at same time. Do you suggest getting him to sit in happily first before travelling or do it all together giving him a treat once he's in and then taking him for a drive?

Definitely have him in a box or boot, if he travels in the main body of the car he needs a harness or you risk £60 fine and three points. I would try limiting his vision, yes.

To begin with, just in, food/treat/praise, sit for a little while, pats, then out. Maybe five or ten minutes twice or three times a day. Car static.

Then as he calms, put him in, praise, a wee spin in the car, praise, out.
Gradually lengthen this.

I know it's not good practice to have anything loose in your car let alone a dog - try telling Rosie to wear a seat belt though (sheep terrier!!)

Being serious though, thanks I'll start tonight with that, even with the other pups in the boot, they LOVE travelling, he was SO worried and at full stretch on his lead.

Charlie used to throw up all the time now he has gone about 6 months without being sick but I blame the last time on my mums driving! lol. We don't feed before traveling as this reduced he amount he brings up. We started off by traveling him on the front seat (in a harness) with the cold air blasting an sometimes windows open. We travelled him once every week and make sure he got a nice walk at the end of it. Eventually he just stopped being sick, still drools but not half as much and now travels in the boot (with no cold air but still keep the car cool). Charlie isn't scared of the car and gets in it happily so it wasn't that he was afraid, we also tried the ginger tablets but these didn't work for him.

As suggested definatly contain him, u can buy soft material pet transporters for the back seat and put your seat belt over them if you prefer.
As sugested always travel on an empty tummy, and as CC sugests have him in their whilst the car is stationary and give him some treats/kong to occupy him as a positive assosiator, u could also plave im in the same carrier in the house and treat him, this way he assosoites the carrier as a positive.
Try ginger/mint(polos) sometimes they work as a more natural anti sickness or go to your vet and ask for cerenia it's a good anti motion sickness tablet.
Also have heard sitting them on newspaper or cardboard can also help prevent sickness

Trust me, this works ...

Line the carrier with a really thick layer of newspaper. I am told that it reduces the static which contributes to carsickness - don't know if that's true, but I do know that putting the dog on thick newspaper cures carsickness. I promise
