My BRT gets very car sick, he doesn't throw up, just salivates like someone has turned a tap on in his mouth. He's 4mths old and i have tried alsorts, taking him out daily, feeding him in the car whilst stationary and even sitting him on the front seat with my hubby. it means that a lot of the time we have to walk both dogs seperatly, because i can't let my other one off the lead round where we live as she is a cat killer
Anyone got any ideas to get him used to the car please??

I would contain him within a crate in a boot, rear of the car............firstly I would crate train him in the house...Reinforcing the introduction to the crate with delicious treats, kong filled treats, chewy bones, feed all his meals in the cage and get him to assosiate the cage positivley....this will take a few months..................the reason u need to do this is when u introduce him to the car inside the crate u will not beable to feed/treat him......as food fed before/during travel will reinforce the sickness.

Even if u dont need to crate him......just place him in it for the purpose of assosiating it with something positive.

Therefor crate training him indoors, he will still assosiate the crate positivly in the car.....are u with me

Covering the cage can also improve the likelyness of motion sickness whilst travelling.

In the mean time u could get a dog guard fitted and take him on very short 5 minute journeys........to somewhere very exciting............local field/park for some quality play time.......so he assosiates every journey with FUN when he eventually gets out of the car.........I definatley would not allow him to travel on the passenger/rear seats.....u need to get him into a consistent/comfortable routine......so boot in crate would be best.

You could also try scullcap&varariun tablets from your vets whilst you are in the process of training him......It is a mild herbal calming tablet that will help that icky feeling whilst travelling.

GOOD LUCK.

P.s always pre-starve( at least 2-3 hours) before a journey and never feed in the car.

Afriend of mine used to give her dog 2 polo mints

......before travelling, and sure enough her shepherd was never sick after eating the mints......I think peppermint as is ginger a type of anti sickness/feeling of sickness remedy............maybe worth a try also...........anyway a few methods for u to try

My big Malinois used to suffer from car sickness when she was little too. I don't know if you can do this, but the way I got her used to it was to take her out into my hay fields in the back of the truck. We only ever did very very short drives of about 5 minutes and then moved up to 10 minutes. She eventually became slightly obsessed with jumping in the truck every time the back was down - she loved it!! So then I moved her into the car and she is absolutely fine now. I hardly ever take my dogs anywhere other than the vets though, but each time I do, she goes with the other dogs in the back and positively smiles.

She was probably about 18 months old though before she finally got over this anxiety.
