Need a little help again, so my OTTB had an accident in my horsebox the day I brought him, went over the front breast bar and fell out the cab door, he had several cuts and fractured from pedal bone, well nearly 2 years later after box rest and slow rehab he is sound, so I’ve started to take him out in the lorry, I brought a new lorry and had it adapted so he carnt go over the breast bar and we have done loads of practice getting in it, now he walks in first time, my problem now, he dosnt seem to want to stay completely upright or still, he leans to the side of the box and insists in trying constantly to turn his head around the front of the partition to look backwards which makes him even more unbalanced, I don’t want to tie him to tight as then he carnt balance and to loose he can turn his head round, so wondering the best way to tie him and to what as because he leans he puts that much pressure on his head collar he snaps anything he’s tired to and gets rub sores under his head from the head collar ??‍♀️ At a loss as really don’t want to ever have an accident again like before, any help will be greatly received thanks

Mine leans when travelling. It's not the box I've travelled plenty in it who didn't. My solution has been to move the central partition across so he has less space and more support

I've had one I did this with. Others I know of, the solution was the opposite, give them so much space is impossible to lean on anything and still put their feet on the opposite wall.

try taking the partition out.

my youngster gets really unsettled feeling boxed in and will try and get round or over the partition no matter how much space he has but travels like a dream without, totally chills and eats calmly.

Can you safely travel him untied (i.e. there's nowhere for him to get caught etc?). One of mine prefers to travel loose and without partition. 95% of the time he stands in the expected direction, slightly herringbone, and eats hay. Every now and then (perhaps once a month, not every trip) he wants a little leg stretch and turns around for a bit, then usually goes back to where he was. If he's tied up, he just scrapes the floor with his front legs, even if he's loose af!

I agree with the needing more space issue if they can't balance properly leaning and trying to go down is normally what they do.

One of my horses started leaning in my lorry after years of travelling in it absolutely fine I tried several different things but he still did it, then he just went lame and he had a hole in his suspensory ligament so it can be indication that something is amiss.

I would rent a stallion box, which is fully enclosed, with no breach bar, with a camera, and try different variations of travelling, starting with the partition pushed to one side and just see what makes him more steady. Something like this,

Thanks I have hired a couple of stallion partition boxes and he’s traveled well in them but didn’t load as well, if money was no object would love stallion portion box but afraid I have what I have and got to use it the best way to suit him?
