They usually position themselves diagonally. They also have more room to spread their legs to balance so less like to fall. I have crossed tied and now I just tie my boy to the front so he can turn his head to look out the back but capture round. Both work well.

I used a length of chain threaded through a piece of steel pipe and attached it to the brackets using coach bolts and nuts. I also incorporated a clip similar to those on head collar ropes to make it adjustable and to allow the horse to unload using the front ramp.
