Travelling 1 horse in a trailer.

Just wanted to ask if, when travelling one horse in a trailer - do you travel with the partitions still in& the horse on the rhs of the trailer, or do you take all of the partitions out, put a full length breast bar in and cross tie?
You can see from my previous posts I have a nervous traveller/problem loader! Lots of people have said to take the partitions out& cross tie which I will prob do but just wanted to check!

Oh - and just to say thank you for the fab email from someone on here who helped me with the loading issues- we are getting there with. The loading now thank you! Just read the rest of your email as well and noticed you also said to take the partitions out& cross tie.
 
With my old girl I travelled her on the rhs with the partition in. My big girl however travels much better without the partition as it gives her more room to balance herself. So I think if your horse is not travelling well with the partition, take it out and see if that helps. If it doesn't, you can always put it back in :)
 
Will subscribe to this thread, I also have a nervous loader and was wondering if taking the partitions out would help.

The only thing is- if I cross tie, how will pony have his haynet:eek:
 
I travel mine with a single full length bar but don't bother cross tying as he doesn't bother to move much. As long as they can't turn around, you're ok.
 
I personally always travel one horse with partition on rhs of trailer. As the sides are padded I think it supports the body when going around corners. IMO I think the horse would be flung around from side to side more if it has the whole width of the trailer. I suppose if you have a big horse it might be better having the extra space but I'd stick to the partitions. I guess everyone does what they think is best for their horse, so I don't think there is a right or wrong way.

I agree.
If I were you I'd try a short trip with the partition and then the same journey without it to see which your horse prefers. You don't need to do htis the same day!

One thing I've noticed over here, with people bringing horses from England, is the side the horse is used to travelling on. When a horse is used to travelling on the rhs it can find it very difficult to balance when they're then put onto the lhs.
Perhaps your horse has been travelled with others and has been on the lhs. It's worth thinking about....
 
Mine travels in RHS with partition in, I have to when taking him on holiday, as a bale of hay, a plastic feed bin and rugs are in the LHS, done it last 4 years, it's a 3 hour non stop trip and up to now he's always been fine.
 
Hi, I have two horses that are mother and daughter both about 16.2. Mum horse can be nervous and would quite often take upto an hour to load in a lorry. We now have a ifor williams 510 and without the partition and a full width breast bar she loads after just a quick check that no horse eating alligators are at the top of the ramp! Have to cross tie her though as the one time I forgot we got to the venue hopped out to open a gate and found her head sticking out the back! I always put teh front ramp down when I load her too, maybe a bit more inviting.
The 5 year old however loves the partition in and I am sure she uses it to help her balance when travelling. They are all different could be worth a try to see if it suits your girl. good luck
