I know you are surposed to travel a horse on the right if it is alone or the heaviest but is it ok to travel a horse on the left it is alone if it will not travel on the right
We have a 15.2 that we always travel on the left of Ifor Williams trailer. If we put him on the right he falls over! We have never had a problem with him on the left - and have been travelling him on the left for seven years now. We do get some funny looks but it is much safer for him, and he is obviously happy as he loads without any trouble and stands quietly in the trailer when on the left, but won't go in if on the right and if we force him in will start thrashing around as soon as we move off. If your horse is happier on the left don't worry about it!
I investigated this when merlin decided that the right hand side was a no go area..... and was told by Ifor that it would be ok, and just to be more careful round corners
I got a full width breast bar instead but have noticed that when he chooses where to stand, it is on the left..... so i cant see there would be much difference to be honest
i travel my 15.1 in an ifor williams 510 without a partition, becuase he refuses point blank to go in trailer with partition in. he then leans on left, with his back legs spread so he can balance. if your horse prefers the left i'd stick with that, its not worth stressing the horse for the sake of getting him on the right.
It doesn't matter which side they are on if the trailer has an independent suspension (like a Bateson). If it's a leaf spring (IW) then they are better on the right but as stated above, prob OK if you take it very steady round corners.
