Travelling a miniature…

For those with miniatures, how do you travel them in your trailers please? I have an Ifor 510 and our journey is likely to be 2.5 hours so want to make sure I make it as comfortable and safe as possible.

I spoke to someone who suggested taking out the partitions and just tying up? I’m guessing he meant cross tying but I’m not really sure.

Otherwise I was thinking of leaving partitions in but using straw/shavings bales as breast/breech bars. I’d also need to put some bales on the other side of the partition as mine has a rubber skirt which would move if said little one leant on it.

Any thoughts appreciated!

I don't travel mine, but if I did I'd probably travel them loose where possible. Obviously that does depend on how calm they are, but I'd worry about bales moving around. I wouldn't cross tie personally as I wouldn't want to prevent them finding their own comfortable position.
 
Thanks. As far as I’m aware she hasn’t travelled before. It’s quite a large trailer and she’s little so wasnt sure if loose was the safest for her due to the space.

Bales would be secured/tied.
 
Mine is a miniature Shetland but he has the partition out, we have made a barricade which attaches to the full width breast bar, and he's tied up under his chin to travel (and he chooses how he wants to stand, which is normally herringbone)
 
I transported a miniature Shetland youngster for my friend, in a 3.5 ton horsebox, we just pushed the partition against the wall and he travelled loose

Take the partitions out, throw in loads of straw bedding, loose pile of forage, travel loose with a head collar on - locking the jockey door, and closing top doors too in case littley decides to climb.
Failing that, lift her into the back of a Volvo estate with dog guard!
 
I've only done short trips with mine but I left the partition in and put a bale of shavings in front of him on its flattest side to sort of replicate a breast bar
 
Depending on the age of your 510 and the design make sure that the groom’s door can’t fly open in transit.

I can lock the groom’s door of my 2006 510 classic from the outside but not from the inside, so a loose pony could accidentally open it.
 
I took a friend’s mini to the vets in my trailer. We used bales of shavings to keep him one side but he still managed to get himself wedged under the rubber skirt of the partition, poor thing. I would take out the partition.
 
Ok thanks all, sounds like partition out is the way to go. My jockey door is the original style with the two flick bolt things rather than a handle/lock/key type so think it should be fine?
