Hi All

So my drama queen Thoroughbred has decided he cant possibly trailer travel without his miniature shetland companion it would appear. I'm hoping he will eventually get over it and travel solo again (Came on suddenly last year, no idea why but hey) but in the meantime if it keeps him happy then it is what it is.

My question is thus;

How do people travel a mini in a 505? The breast bars are obviously higher than he is, he stands on the trailer fine but I want to try and make sure he is as safe/happy as possible!

Also, say I went to a competition/clinic/whatever, is leaving little one on the trailer a faesible option? Obviously he would have hay etc but I was thinking if I just swing the partitions over he could just be loose to ensure he cant panic/get stuck

Ta!

Find someone handy to pop a little breast bar in or put a board across, alternatively tie up at the back of the box

We travelled a friend’s Shetland mini to the vets surrounded by shavings bales. We had to put them on the unused side too when we collected him as he managed to wedge himself under the centre partition on the way there (506 trailer)

Carefully. I had a standard Shetland. I came back from an event with my Dales, dropped the ramp on my 3.5 tonne box, the Shetland ran into the box before I unloaded and wedged himself between my Dales’s legs. There was so much tension on the partition I couldn’t spring it and it took two burly farmers quite some time to free them. He also happily travelled in the living of my 7.5 tonne with his head in the cab. He slipped his head collar and opened the door from the horse compartment to the living. Life is never dull with a Shetland.

Not a mini but my friend has a tiny welshie that had to travel in their 505 and they just fitted very low down bars for her - don't think it was too much of a chore

I always stick mine in front of the breast bars under the noses of the other two. They get on very well, which is good because once or twice he has turned around so that his bum is in their partition... which is definitely not where I left him.

IME experience they put themselves where they want to be whatever your best laid plans were. I now just leave mine loose in the 7.5t. She can't get into the area where big horse is due to haynet and partitions so just plonks herself where she can eat as much as possible during the journey! As soon as the ramp goes down she's on as loves an outing and moves herself to allow me to load up one or two big ones. They are very clever and definitely Houdinis in a hairy coat.
