Travelling advice needed please.

I'm moving at the end of the month, and so need to transport Monty Knobberts. We're moving to the opposite end of the country - about 5 hours by car at motorway speeds (250+ miles) about 80% of the way. So guessing this would be 6 hours plus transporting horseface?

I'm having a lot of trouble arranging a transporter as they're not exactly busy locations... companies are to and from the UK the whole time but rarely between these two points of Ireland!

Is that length of a journey too far to travel a horse by trailer? As far as I know he travels well, but he's a big lad for a trailer, and it's a long way.

Any ideas/advice please?
 
If he travels well and is used to a trailer I don't see a problem. Could you plan to break the trip for a night somewhere if you didn't want to do it in one? When I was endurance crew in the dim'n'distant past we would do Essex to Exmoor and back (so about 250 miles each way) with a 1964 Landie and ancient rear unload Rice - not exactly an Oakley Supremacy. Horse always travelled well. Motorway driving is much easier for them, just takes forever! And remember to be extra careful with braking, cornering etc when you come off onto A/B roads at the end as he will be tired.
 
Thanks, that's very helpful :) I have over the years heard the usual conflicting opinions on whether trailers or lorries are more comfortable (forward v sideways travel), max time in trailers etc etc. My poor wee brain can only take so much contradiction before it gives up altogether ;)
 
Well, 'they' say travelling backwards is the most comfortable, but if he doesn't mind either way I wouldn't worry! Could you hire a little self-drive lorry as another option? Re trailer, am sure I don't have to tell you this but be extra vigilant on the motorways for idiot drivers who don't make allowances for the speed you'll be going at. People can be such prats :rolleyes:
 
Try myrentalhorsebox.com. You rent out normal peoples lorries for self-drive hire so they have lorries all over the place and some of them are really sensibly priced if you are happy to go with something less flashy. Got some nice ones too if you need to sleep over....you not the horse
