am due to take daughters horse to evening rally next week..so will be dark.i have only ever towed in daylight.are most horses fine.i had thought of closing back door so she wouldnt be concerned re car lights.any other thoughts.

Ours have always travelled well in the dark, they were more interested in their haynets rather than what was going on outside the trailer
I would suggest keeping the back doors open (as this it what they are used to)

i've never had a horse with a problem at night....does your trailer have an internal light? just put that on....but TBH i've towed no problem with internal lights off in the past....

Ours have always been fine travelling at night. I'd keep things as close to normal as possible and try to make sure you stay nice and relaxed so that she doesn't pick up any anxiety from you.

I would keep the internal light off. If you've spent more than a few minutes looking directly in to a light you'll know it's uncomfortable.

I've never had a problem travelling at night either. I would make sure to load and unload somewhere well lit so they can see the ramp etc.

Isnt it law to have the light on. If theres no light then the law doesnt apply. Im sure I was told this.
If it was me I would put the light on as it softens the glare of headlights, flashing roadlights etc and I would either leave the back top doors open or shut the one on the right side, passing traffic side.

We travel at night relatively often, for very long journeys (500 miles, Italy to Germany and vice versa) we always travel overnight as there is less chance of traffic jams, in summer it's cooler, and so on.

However we do have to put the internal light on as both horses seemed to be very startled by the lights from incoming cars, but settled down when the internal light was on. This happened to both horses (two different journeys).

I guess you have to find out what works best with yours.

I often travel at night with absolutely no problem - I just keep everything the same as I do during the day. However I will say I was driving behind a friend in the dark once and she had the internal light on in her trailer and I could quite clearly see her horse was bothered by it as it was shining right in his eye. I got her to pull over & turn it off and I could see he travelled much better without it on. Since then I have always left mine off.
