I have an inexperienced horse who is starting to travel and get out and about but she can get quite lairy and strong when she gets out somewhere new/exciting until she has been able to have a walk round and take all the newness in. I have always travelled horses in a leather headcollar for safety but she gets really wooden when she is lairy and I just don't have as much control as I'd like. I do a fair bit of groundwork at home in a rope halter but the thought of travelling in a rope halter makes me shudder, and I'm not so keen on travelling in a dually either. What do other people do if you want to travel safely but have more control at the other end?

Can you travel in the headcollar and change it in the lorry to the rope halter before offloading?
Edited:
I think the Dually headcollar has the normal ring, but also rings each side to attach to the rope that goes across the nose, so you could use that and just move the rope from the chin to the side.

Could you travel with the rope halter under your heacollar? Take the headcollar off in the trailer and attach the rope to the halter to lead off.

Thanks for your reply Abacus. Yes the Dually does have that but I still don't like the idea of travelling in a nylon headcollar. I think I had this drummed into me very well many, many moons ago! The idea of swapping halters in the lorry before unloading also feels pretty unsafe, I honestly don't know how I could achieve that without at some point having a fairly elevated horse effectively loose in the lorry stall with me trying to get a headcollar on from outside the stall

Rope halter underneath leather head collar. Tie to leather while travelling. Tie to rope loading/unloading

This is what I do and it works really well, i used to mess on taking it on and off but when he was inexperienced it was a bit dodgy so just leave it on now and make sure it’s tucked away
