Travelling horses backwards

To all who have a backwards travelling horsebox - have you ever found a horse that doesn't like it?
New mare thumps about and actually pulled a shoe off which resulted in a punctured sole (now sorted hopefully) Before we try again just wanted to know whether others had experienced problems as all our others travel so well backwards. Maybe she doesn't like being travelled by herself or maybe she can't work out how to balance herself - not sure yet

Dear pootler - new horse so am working slightly in the dark - seller said she was a good traveller and the transporter who brought her here said she travelled well so was just wondering whether it was the backwards thing that was upsetting her - she seems to put her hindquarters underneath her and bang with her front feet. Never had this problem with my other two who have travelled miles and miles backwards and almost go to sleep! Its a nice airy new Stratford box so purpose built for horses

Hmm that's a tricky one. Perhaps she is a bit phased by the new way of travelling. I guess all you can do is keep trying. Some horses are so ungrateful, buy them a lovely new box and what do they do......
 
My warmblood won''t travel any other way. He falls over if we travel him herringbone or forward facing. Mind you he isn't brilliant travelling rearwards but at least he stands up!
 
My horse doesn't like travelling backwards, he is fantastic herringbone but when he goes in my instructors rear-facing box although he still travels ok (he knows how he should behave!!!) he is a lot more fidgety etc! Some of them just don't like it as they have to use the same balance mechanisms as when they are forwards basically, I think herringbone is the best and would never have anything different.
 
Hmmm interesting theory except one of ours will not travel forwards but goes to sleep travelling backwards....perhaps it is a case of the exception proving the rule but anymore thoughts most welcome.

I have on several occasions hired a Theault horsebox to travel mine in and I thinks it's a super box, well thought out, roomy, easy to drive etc and very very convenient.

However I've now had three different horses in it and although they are all very willing to go in it none of them seem to travel as well in it as they do in my 7.5 tonne herringbone lorry. Even my very surefooted cob who has coped with some appalling driving didn't seem able to keep his balance although I drove him very carefully in it.

This goes against everything I was told but it's the reason I have decided not to downgrade to a modern lorry. The cob even coped well in a very high-mounted and sway-y forwards facing ancient Transit but travel backwards - no.
