My O/H has recently started up his own yard training pointers, he has not taken his test to drive the lorry and therefore I am designated driver (I am not employed by him). I have taken an exam, I can't remember what it was called but it involved answering 20 or so basic questions . I need to sort out with the insurance about getting covered to drive other peoples horses. What else do I need to be aware of? I presume I need to sort out the tacho, but not really sure how it works? It seems like such a minefield, I would be very grateful for any advice or direction to other threads that have discussed this before. Many thanks

If there is anyway you could manage with a 3.5 ton lorry it would save you heaps of paperwork and expence because you most likely need a operators licence for the lorry and apply for opperating center for where you keep it the lorry will need regular safety checks and there is other issues like tachograph and drivers hours regs... sorry but hope that helps

Unfortunately not, we use my mums lorry which is 7.5t there is no way we could afford to buy our own and we're very lucky she lets us borrow it.

well be very carefull.... if VOSA stop you and decide you are useing it for bussness purposes and you dont have an O licence they can impound it they take these laws very seriously to protect bonafide bussiness from unfair compitition and sadly it dont matter if you are hauling horses or bricks its hire or reward... You need to look up area trafic office and hgv licences... they will advise...
