I have been told to give horses that are bad travellers alot of room but have read on another post that someone got stopped and weighed and was told that they had given the horses too much room what is the correct way to travel horses

Experiment I generally find most horses prefer plenty of room particularly in a trailer where it is easier to balance if they can spread there legs. A bit of trial and error and you will find what is most acceptable to your horse.

I have always heard plenty of room, NOT the tie them tight and block them in method. Preferably with a free head.

The problem with this is, will they try to jump out?

Also backward, or at an angle, not the facing forward that we have to do with a trailer.

bad travellers need room to spread their feet apart to give a wider base to balance, i've found. they don't like the restriction of narrowish partitions, especially if they go all the way to the floor. they shouldn't be encouraged to lean on the partitions for balance as they're more likely to fall over that way, i reckon.
i don't think there's such a thing as "too much room"... my old mare travelled appallingly (kicked at every bend, turn, change in road surface, rumble, acceleration, deceleration!) and was happiest travelling loosely tied with an entire 3-horse area to herself. she'd park her bum in the corner closest to the front, at an extreme angle, and was reasonably happy that way. if other horses had to go on with her, she had to be in the partition beside the ramp, with as much room as i could give her... hemmed in by other horses, she'd freak.

Hmm now normally I'd agree with giving them lots of room however my pony cannot travel if he has too much room he just falls over. We have to wedge him in with the partitions. Mind you everyone who has met him agrees he is odd

It is better to give bad travellers lots of room!

Just get a vets letter from your vet stating that your horse has to have lots of room to travel and the reasons for it!

I have one for my horses-never been a problem when I have been stopped!

Are there actually any regulations stating minimum/maximum room? As far as I am aware, there are not, but I stand to be corrected. Should this be correct (no regulations) then there is no doubt that you must carry your horse in as much or as little room as each horse prefers.

Thinking about it, I have read an article in a newspaper about the Dartmoor Hill Pony Sales, where it is stated that the transporters may only carry four horses per cubicle, but it did not enlarge on that eg size.
