Does anyone travel their horses in a 3.5t without a partition in, so they have the whole area to find their own preferred place to stand?

Horse hasn't travelled backwards before and is kicking like mad for some reason, even though he has loads of room.

Was still planning on tying up with a single rope, not cross tying.

Has this set up worked for anyone?

I wouldn't do this if there is nothing between the horse and the ramp - if he leans, it may not be secure enough and fall down. But if you have loading gates that close inside the ramp and are strong enough it might be ok. As an alternative perhaps you could fix (tie?) the partition as far open as possible so that it is diagonal, giving more space at the head end for the horse to move and spread out.

My full up 16.2 was a bit tight in my 3.5 although he travelled really well i did hear him lose his balance from time to time. The back was divided exactly in two by the petition which was fixed so I had it moved by 6 inches or so, now the horse travels slightly at an angle has more room to spread his back legs and travels without moving at all. Until I had additional bolts put on the ramp, I did have it come down a couple of times so if you do travel without the partition make sure the ramp can't come down.

Could your horse climb over the breast bar/partition? I just think that giving them the entire horse area might encourage them to go over, something I'm careful about in my lorry.

I have done this in our work lorry with the cameras on and IMO they do not like having all that space. They travel quieter if cross tied rather than on a single rope too. My own horse is a very good traveller but he prefers partitions and was quite fractious when I travelled him without.

The partition is adjustable the whole length of the back wall so I can just slide it along to the ramp to give him the whole space but still have the partition there if that makes sense?

He can't climb over the breastbar due to the design of the horse area.

I could cross tie him, but then he wouldn't be able to slot himself into a herringbone position if that's where he's comfortable?

My old girl travels in my 3.5t with no partition, she is just more comfortable with the extra room.

I did cross tie her, but she didn't need to be so now I just tie her up normally and let her mover her bum over to where she is mist comfortable.
She tends to stand almost on the correct side but with her back end in the midlevel the partition slot.

I think its what works best for your horse, everyone has an opinion on it and it won't suit every horse to have so much room, but worth a try if the horse isn't 100% happy with the patron set up as it is.

I got a new 3.5 t just over a month ago, first to trip out my horse kicked the inside to bits, the partition was solid to the floor and I think she couldn't spread her legs far enough. I now travel her without the partition and she has finally got used to it after many short journeys, and lots of kicking behind my seat! building up to 45 mins this weekend. Once I had a camera I could see she was trying to turn around too but she is cross tied so can't, she has now got used to that too. The back is closed off so there is no where for her to go and she used to travel in a trailer without partition too. She does seem to,stand at an angle.

My cob loves travelling with no partition.

I bought the lorry with a herringbone partition in place, which gave her ample room. It was a full length wooden partition. She managed to knock the partition down in transit!!! It fits the same as most lorries I've seen.

She was very anxious travelling after that happened.

I decided to take the partition out and try her, and I haven't looked back. She is now a happy passenger and doesn't try and climb up the walls once the engine has stopped, like she used to!

I think she likes travelling facing oblique, half backwards/half herringbone, with her bottom wedged up against the wall.

Due to the herringbone design of the box, she is just tied with one rope. I wouldn't cross tie her. My horse obviously likes being in control of her own destiny and moving about freely!

we travelled a mare and foal with no partition in my equisport 3.5t , i have ramp gates fitted on mine thou so i guess as long as you know they cant push on the ramp
