I thought it was legal to travel in the living of a lorry if it has an integral cab. We always have done, as I think have lots of other people. Don't think its allowed if the cab is separated from the horse bit, and definitely never in a trailer.
Don't know if thats of any help, I don't know the actual law....

you can only travel in the living area of the lorry IF the lorry has a cut through to the cab, if it doesnt then you cant travel in the living
I think you will find if the seats are forward facing in the living then you have to have a correctly fitted seatbelt and this will be checked at the vehices MOT or plating. Please correct me someone if I am wrong.
I am pretty sure that you can not travel in the living unless there are proper seats and seat belts. I know someone was recently fined in France for having person travelling in the living - but UK law might be different.
I think you can, and having seatbelts will depend on the age of the lorry.
We had driver/passenger belts fitted to our f reg as it had none, I've never seen anyone with a motorhome use seatbelts so assume it must be the same.
Providing your vehicle is not segregated....ie the whole cab and living area are accessible as one unit, without a partition (otherwise known as a bulkhead)....then legally you may travel in that area, the regulations being there must be one fixed seat per person.
The same regulations apply to travelling in a motorhome or motor caravan conversion.
It would not be alllowed if the vehicle was articulated and pulled by a seperate cab/motorised unit. Nor would it be allowed if there was no way of communicating without restriction between the passenger area and the driver area. Ie a pulled caravan or a hgv artic conversion.
You can travel in the living if there is means of escape if the lorry were to tip. Eg. you must be able to enter the cab to exit the vehicle if the lorry tipped onto the grooms door.
Seatbelts only have to be used if fitted to the vehicle.
Seatbelts are not usually fitted in livings therefore are not required.
my box is so old it has no seat belts anywhere! It does have a crawl through into the living though which is where the majority of people traveling with us sit
