so although we have previously travelled my mare and 2 month old foal we used my 4x4 and trailer. car has just very expensively failed it's mot :mad::mad: but my friend has offered to take us to the planned show this weekend :D:D:D:D In the trailer we travelled with no partition and the mare cross tied - how should we do it in the lorry? It's a 5ish tonne stalled herringbone (I think) for 2 horses.

Yes, it should not be a problem - just remove the partition or get it lifted back against one wall & fixed securely. Give them the double section all to themselves & ensure foal cannot escape whatsoever.

One thing to watch out for is the steepness of the ramp for foal unloading etc (and for mum too if she has not gone in a lorry) allow plenty of time :)

ditto mynutmeg. if the steepness of the ramp is likely to cause a problem you can use an incline to help level the ramp out a bit :)

Mare has travelled in a lorry before and the ramps not too steep. Should I just single tie the mare to the side or the front or should I try and cross tie straigh or to the side?
I think the partition can be folded back but apparently is very stiff to remove - am picking up the lorry tomorrow for show on saturday so will get a good look then.

Thanks

as long as foaly cant creep off through any gaps :)
personal preference whether or not you tie the mare up, probably partly dependant on how well she travels

Usually travels nonprobs but have never travelled her without tying up. We're not going far but want to be safe.

Just curious- did u go to your show? If so how did u get on with lorry and what did u do in the end?

Yeh we went yesterday - am still recovering :p
Got on fine, mare went up no bother at all, foally was not so keen - had one person either side to stop him going off to the side and one person behind giving a bit of oomph, once on he was fine.
We travelled with no partition and just tied the mare to one spot at the side. They both travelled really well although we had fun getting Milo off once at the other end. He went on and off much better the second time.
