Travelling problem

Hi I am new to these forums and would like a little advice

I have just worked my first season for the master of our local hunt.

One of the horses had a problem with travelling in the trailer for the last few meets.

He will load fine but when the trailer starts to move he starts throwing his weight around leans on the partition and tries to climb the walls with all of his hooves.

Someone suggested that maybe he is getting static elecricity shocks.Do any of you know if this is possible and if so is there a way to help his situation.

Have you tried taking the partition out, having a single breast bar and then cross tie him. Lots of horses have problems travelling in trailers with a partition.

Hi Jaylen

no i have not tried that while i have been working there.

Apparently they didn't have a partition in the old trailer and when he was travelling in that he would lean on the other horse that travelled with him.

I will suggest to the master to try your suggestion should the problem start again next season.

He only started doing this again for the last 3 or 4 meets, which resulted in me having to travel in the trailer with him.Hoping that now the season is over he will have time to forget about it and be ok next season

Are you mad????

Don't ever do that for goodness sake.

get that partition out quick and start travelling him on his own!

he is panicking and due to the size of the travelling space struggling to find his feet. it has nothing to do with static.

My gelding does exactly the same and as such I have now taken the partition out and a full width breast bar, and have a horse that will now travel. He is crossed ties and chooses to stand herringbone.

it is not a good idea to travel in the trailer as it can be very dangerous

ETA you should never travel two horses together without a partition ( I am not sure but I think it is illegal to do this)
If this horse leant on his trailer partner without the partition he is a horse that needs to travel on his own . he could be better in a lorry rather than a trailer

Typical of hunting.....

....................................

disagree - typical bad employer who couldn't give a sh1t about their employee...........

back to point:
either change horse side of travelling or tell your employer to buy hunting box, as is will be same price to buy and run, and the car and trailer............

ps................. sorry but i personnell wouldn't want to travel in trailer not matter how much i was getting paid too.................

Either they sort out their transport correctly or find other employment with horses where they understand and will look after you and not kill you - sorry just MO

Hi Thanks for all your responses

Never knew it was illegal to travel in the trailer ,so after all your advise i won't be travelling in it again !!

The travelling of the two horses without a partition was before my time ,as i have only just worked this season.

We have a lorry but this is used by the hounds and the whips horses and these are at a different location from the masters horses.

It is not always possible to travel him on his own as sometimes i have to go with the masters second horse.

I will see how he goes next season and will make the suggestion of the single bar and cross tying.

See what adjustments can be made on the size of his space... max room on front and breach bar.. and whether you can move the partition at all, or it only has one setting. If you are travelling 2 similar size horses, narrowing one side may then upset the other horse anyway.

At the end of the day the only solution is that he needs more space to spread his legs (particularly his hinds) to balance himself.

Hi I think the trailer only has the one setting for the partition but i will have a look tommorow and check.

The the other 2 horses are both 16.2hh ,the one being the problem is the biggest though at 17.2hh so could just be the case of needing more space due to his size.

Just seemed strange that it started towards the end of the season, yet early on he was fine.

Good point though he is such an old hand at that buisness and such a gent in the stable

Another season and i'll know him better

Had a long break from working with horses just need to readjust to their way of thinking.
