My horse is used to travelling extensively as he is retired endurance. He is now retired, I have him on loan and used for hacking by myself. I have a small box and we go out every week somewhere different for a hack. He loads no problem but will wee on the box coming home. Not going out, just coming home. I walk around and let him graze before loading to come home and occasionally he's got the message and done his wee. I whistle and scratch his tummy to try to get him to wee.
Before loading, when he sees the box ready he will do his droppings or when he gets on the box. That is easy, I put newspaper down and lift out the whole package.
It is the wee, I get home, just want to unload, feed him and turn him out, and I have to clean out the box, it is awash with his urine. I put down loads of newspaper and straw on top, buckets of sodden paper, then wash it out with disinfectant and leave the ramp down to dry it. He has a net of hay to eat while travelling, but he has this issue of weeing on the box.
Can anyone shed a light on what I can do or why he does it?

I dont see this as a problem, he is a horse and if he needs to go he will, better that than holding on and getting colicky, put down plenty of shavings for him to go on and to soak it up then clean out when you get home, some of mine wee in the box, others will wait until they are home but most of it will run out of the drainage holes or stay in the bedding put down for that purpose.
