Whats the best way to start introducing a puppy to travelling in the car? Pickle is allowed to come out to play from tomorrow and want her to come out with me places but wondered how best to travel her etc..
Put them in and go!!!!!! Start as you mean to go on i.e. if they are going to be expected to travel in the back behind a dog grill put it in the back. Best to do a short journey 1st and ensure it hasn't just been fed. I have only had one dog get travel sick (my JR when I picked him up at 7 weeks (his mum had had enough of him by then
), but he did have to travel from the Isle of Wight via a car ferry, plus a 2 hour car journey).
Best thing is to get it in the car as often as poss. In a crate or behind a grill.
Did this with my pup when I first got her did around 30miles every day with her, she has never been travel sick. Some friends got her litter sister when she was 5month where as I got mine at 9weeks. Her sister had never traveled till they got her & she is still being travel sick now at 9mnth, though is improving slowly.
Travelled everywhere since Boris (JRT) was 9 weeks old, no problem... he's very contented in the car and protects it (growls and barks at passer by)!! he's nearly 6 months now
I would use a cage to get her used to travelling, I consider them to be ultra safe for dog and driver. Saying that my dogs have grown to big and my car too small for cages, but it has taught them to be well mannered and behaved.
Another good thing about the cage is that when you open your boot door, the dog can not just jump out and they naturally learn to wait from being in a cage.
