Travelling ready tacked up?

If there are two in trailer they don't wear tack but if only one (travels without partition) he often will be tacked up - especially if we are going hunting as he is bloomin' difficult to hold still long enough to chuck the saddle on :p

I always travel fully tacked to meets, comps, clinics etc. There's only me and I can't be bothered faffing around. I travel back fully tacked as well. It keeps the horses back warm.

Wow! I'm surprised how many of you travel tacked up! I've never seen any problem with it personally, but I have a friend who makes it sound like a hanging offence!! I always knew she was being over the top!

We always used to travel the point to pointers to the gallops all tacked up....never had a problem

Ditto - minus martingale attached to the reins and reins knotted - same for hunting - who wants to try and tack up an over excited horse at the gallops / or meet? Beware of elasticated girths - not too tight.

Put the bridle on in the trailer and lead out with the headcollar, then all you need to do is take the headcollar off, and there you go.

I'm so surprised that everyone seems to be saying it's ok to travel tacked-up. I was taught it was an absolute no-no and have never done it. I expected loads of replies with words to that effect but perhaps it doesn't really matter after all.

Ditto. It's not something I've ever done as would worry about the horse getting tangled up in some way. Like anything there is no right or wrong answer, personally I won't be changing from tacking up when we get to our destination.

Yep, have often travelled with horse tacked up. Masefen's way is pretty much how we do it, I hate seeing reins looped through the stirrup - they can still get caught and less slack in them so horse will panic more!

How many of you leave a horse tacked up in the trailer in between classes? Same idea really, although I would avoid a sided snaffle of sorts as too easy to get caught in something.

Although last horse was left tacked up in lorry with saddle and bridle on and headcollar over bridle - we were at a hunter trial and they were changing the course so we went to check - when we arrived back somehow he had got his bridle off but the headcollar was still on
I still can't work out how he did it!!

I know that some people do this in USA, but I have never seen any one travel tacked up over here. That does not mean that they do not, but would be extremely unusual.

I think you are taking a risk with both the tack and the horse. Even when we have travelled some where to hack, we still, tack up at the location, and yes the horses might not stand that still, but still ok, not enough of a problem to worry about.

Oh dear I must be in the minority, I never travel with anything other than headcollar and rug(if needed)and leg protection. Having seen a friend arrive open her lorry and seen her horses mouth torn by a bridle caught in a haynet I don't think it's worth it. The horse lost feeling on that side of it's mouth so was a problem to ride after that.

I think that people that travel on here fully tacked up (ie with bridle one) if they are going for a short journey hunting etc, they won't be giving their horses hay. I never used to give my horse hay on the way to a show, only used to give hay on the way back. :)

I do regularly - but always put a rug on, because the saddle can get scraped quite easily when loading and unloading, and twist the reins on the bridle so they can't get caught on anything x

Always travel in a saddle and we unload and load with bridle as my boy is a bit of a pain when he goes to parties and it's much easier.

I'm surprised people seem to have an issue with it done safely.

Exactly. It seems to me that everyone who has said they travel tacked up has explained how it can be done safely. I wouldn't let a tacked up horse have access to hay anywhere, let alone travelling :)

After my horse slipped & fell in a trailer I would have hate to have thought what may have happened if he had have had a saddle on too!! I can imagine it's handy though so you dont have to tack up once unloaded!

I choose not to most times but did when I hunted and also when I go to clinics when everyone is keen to be off asap. I felt it would be safer to have the saddle on (under a rug) then try to do it at the other end!. I don't put a bridle on though ever as not worth me stressing that it has got caught on something but then its only a matter of moments to put it on the other end.

Well yes, that is extremely risky, but then I would never, travelling or not, give my horses a haynet when they were tacked up.

I do quite frequently, but only for short journeys. Horse is a really good traveller and I've never had any problems. My OH usually drives and I can watch him all the time through the window at the front of the trailer. He barely moves a muscle!

I wouldn't have done it in the past with some of my previous horses as some were very fidgety and moved around a lot.
