Travelling Tacked up?! Do you?

i have to but my mares bridle on to travel her in, shes just prances like mad when we get anywhere and doesn't stand still at the other end. can generally manage to get saddle on when we get there but literally have to let her walk in circle on lead rope and get 2 people to do it whilst she walks and i have to attach breast plate/martingale when im on as its easier.

if im going somewhere without an arena ie beach xc hunting etc shes got to go in saddle because no way do i have any control when we get there to put tack on. she always comes back without it though.

I always used to travel tacked up for hunting, as it was just easier than having an argument with Finn :p

I always used to travel him with his boots on underneath travel boots aswell :)

Ditto, what I do :)

I don't go tacked up for shows however, I sort the horses out when we get there for them though :)

bridle if going hunting/beach/random hack on hills.... basically anywhere with unsecured parking and I don't want to be faffing about trying to get bridle on and take headcollar off.

Used to put saddle on too but now have a new one so might not!

Mine travels v well though I see it as like everything horsey you assess the risks and make whatever seems to be like the best decision.

Would never travel mums with saddle on as she is girthy so can be figety and doesn't travel well so those as a combination would not be a good idea.

I always travel my pony with his saddle on as hes a pain to tack up even at home. Put saddle cover over the saddle and then if cool enough a sheet over the top. Then when i get there i put his bridle on in the trailer.

Easier and less stressful for us both!

My TB on the other hand stands quietly to be tacked up at events!

So horses for courses, as it were. I, however, resent the implication that people who travel their horses tacked up do not value them and treat them badly to the point that they end up in sales lame and skinny. Trust me, I value my horse very highly and would not put him in a situation that I thought was an unnecessary risk, however he travels well and with the reins out of the way and a fleece over the saddle, he’s safe enough. Maybe I’m just not holier than thou enough, though…

have always travelled the hunters home with saddles loosened but on. I cant see a problem with saddles but wouldnt like to travel anything wearing a bridle (too many accidents waiting to happen).

I sometimes do if we're not going too far (less than 30mins in the lorry), but generally with just his saddle on and either a saddle cover over it, or fleece rug over him and travel boots of course. Very rarely I will travel with his bridle on as well if it is somewhere he might be a bit excited i.e. a xc event but he doesn't have a haynet then so he can't get caught in it and again only if it's a short distance. He always travels home untacked.

George travels well I wouldn't do it if I didn't, yes accidents can happen, but trying to put a bridle on in the back of a lorry or in an unsecured parking area could cause an accident too (my friend was seriously injured doing just that in a lorry, so I am always wary of that).

Please do not imply that I don't value my horse, those who know me no nothing could be further from the truth.

occasionally - esp for hunting - saddle on but not bridle - or if i'm runing late for lesson as she's a bit cold backed so i dont like to chuck saddle on and jump straight on

Have never travelled a horse tacked up - even for hunting. If hunting requires parking on the side of the road I just tack up on the lorry.

A true hunter is not always the most valued horse, and mine are. And I'm quite old-school in a lot of ways, but not in cases like these..

What!!! and because I travel my horse tacked up - I don't value my horse? that means that I can't be old schooled like you so I must be new fangled :o

Well, I suppose I have two horses so if one drops down dead in the lorry on the way to the hunt from sudden 'early tacked up syndrome' I always have the other one:o

never travel with the bridle on as i think there is too much risk of the horse getting hooked on something.

i will travel with a saddle on as long as it is cold enough to warrant a fleece over the top (don't want saddle scratched!).

i have done this a few times with mine if short journey and a we used to travel the event horses this way in the winter if taking a load to sj/ dressage.

I always travel tacked up for hunting :)

I also usually always travel tacked up to a lesson or rally :)

And to those who think that horses that are tacked up travelling are treated poorly, then I suggest you look at my other thread.

And to think, people actually think that they are better than you because they dont tack up travelling?!
Maddness!

I travel my loan horse with saddle on as through previous injury he takes alot of calm and quiet to allow a saddle to be put on without having a fit and throughing himself on the floor. As I value my horse i would prefer to risk having a saddle sligtly scratched altho it has a cover on rather than have him kill himself or someone else trying to tack up at an event. Put bridle on once arrive but still in trailer/lorry.

Tacked up for hunting, wouldn't have a hope in hell's chance of tacking up when I arrived
Tack up there for anything else.

Always travel tacked up for hunting, but general competing (when have to get numbers, walk course, etc etc) tend to tack up when am there. Horse tends to be somewhat wired heading for hunting so safer tacking up at home!!
