Travelling tacked-up horses

If we are going for a lesson in the eve or anything with a friend then I go tacked up, chuck a rug over to protect the saddle, twist the reins and thread through the throatlash. We travel in cut through cabs and can easily access the horses if need be

Have always done it with huners to do ill effect to horse or tack be it in wagon or trailer.

I only travel him tacked up if going hunting as wont stand still long enough. But all other times no!.

I had done when I went hunting as it was such a hassle to do it in a field somewhere, also used to sometimes for the local show that was a quick 5 min drive down the road from us

I do once in a while but generally I travel untacked. My horses are all travelled loose so I always have a fear of them getting down and rolling with their tack on....

travel with saddle on as horse is cold backed and it's not easy to saddle him at the best of times - but I never ever travel withouit a rug on and one with a surcingle as well to make sure the irons/stirrups stay in place

never had a problem

Personally never, IMO its not worth the risk for a 5 minute job

And here

I can see why maybe you would for hunting. But why any other time? 10 mins (or whatever) to tack up at home, or 10 mins when you get there. What's the advantage of doing it at home? Surely there's no advantage for the horse even if there's one for you?

A member of our Riding Club brought her horse for a lesson, it was tacked up for travelling. When she opened the back ramp of the trailer, the horse tried to rush out, and the breech bar went between the saddle and the horse's back. It flipped the horse over backwards and it was dead when it hit the floor. It doesn't save any time, and where is the point in taking unnecessary risks?

I wouldn't, for fear of things happening like Tass's horrific story. But also I dont think its very comfy for them to have parts of a saddle to lean on the partition.

Ive travelled with a bridle on occassionally (with reins tied up) but that's it. I've had too many incidents with travelling horses to have to worry about tack being involved too!
