Would you travel tacked up? I want to take D autumn hunting on Saturday but I may well need to go on my own so I won't have someone to hold her while I sort myself out. There isn't anywhere to park so I'll have to unbox in the road. Its only a 20min drive, if that, do you think she and my saddle will be alright or is it a horrible idea?

I always tack up to go hunting as it would be impossible to take my horse and expect her to stand still when she hears the hounds, even if its a hours journey, I usually protect her saddle with a travel rug so it doesn't get scratched and she is always fine, then all I have to do is is take her headcollar and rug off when I get there.

I always travel tacked up to a hunt, a) their bonkers with excitement and no point fighting with them b) saves time and hassle when there, whip off travelling boots leg up & on your dancing horse (or mine)! As long as their ok travellers and keep the noseband looser & girth (not so much they fall off) all you have to do is tighten them and your away.

I always travel tacked up to a hunt! having 16.2hh of excitable horse is not so fun to tack up at a meet

I always take my hunting tacked up because there is no way I would be able to tack him up there. I leave his grackle undone and his girth loose. Then all I have to do is take of his travelling boots and do up his grackle and girth. Much easier and horse and saddle both survive the trip fine.

Thanks, thats kind of what I was thinking but I wanted to make sure it wasn't a stupid idea for some reason that I hadn't thought of. I'm so excited

It also means that you don't leave your tack behind (has been known).

Just a question - do you leave the saddle on at the end of the day to travel home in? I was always told to leave the saddle on as to release the pressure of the rider/saddle suddenly could lead to trouble. So remove bridle, give haynet, but cover the saddle with a rug and travel home.

Yep, we always tack up before hunting. Mostly because we always arrive late!

Going home, we take saddle off if we are in the lorry with the racks, and don't if we are in the old one because there is nowhere to put them!

We always travel to the meet tacked up ..although one of the horses has started to throw himself about in the trailer and once the saddle managed to slip sideways ....so he is now travelled in his bridle and the saddle put on when we arrive

At the end of the day they are untacked and travel home in head collars and fleeces

I have to take my horse tacked up otherwise he won't load unless he has another horse in the box already...I am going to a show about 2.5 hours away tomoro so I am going to untack when in the lorry and retack when I get there! Confusing or what..

Ditto, I gave up the struggle long ago and now travel mine all tacked up, never had a problem.

I'd read that it was a bad idea to travel a horse while wearing a bridle as they can do a lot of damage to their mouth/jaw if the bit ring/bridle headpiece gets snagged on something.

I'd happily travel with a saddle on (and covered with a rug) for a reasonably short journey, but not a bridle.

I travel my boy short distances (30 mins) tacked up - I sometimes need a bridle to load him so just easier to travel him in it though I do take it off when loaded to come home so he can munch on haynet.

Used to travel with saddle on too but new saddle is slightly wider and just touches the partitions so will have to wait until it flattens down a bit.

Would definitely travel tacked up if going hunting / funride - I'm better just to get on him asap...
