Travelling tacked up..

Have done all variations , no tack , saddle only and fully tacked in a trailer with no problems whatsoever . One of our horses is cold backed and she is much better if she has travelled with a saddle

Travelling tacked up is much more commonplace than I thought-interesting thread. I've travelled mine in his saddle for v short distances (rug over) but never his bridle-if there is a possible way to injure itself,a horse will find it (especially mine). And,he used to be a complete t*t once we arrived at places-tacking up in the lorry was not that easy but he has, over time, learnt to stand on lorry. Helps if ramp down&he can see to nosey a bit whilst I (in his view) faff about doing stuff to him.

I have always travelled mine tacked up on the way to places. I twist reins and put throatlash through and do it up and put a fleece on just so my saddle doesn't get scratched. I've never had any problems.

Same as what I'd do. Planning to go to a farm ride next Saturday and this is what I'll be doing. She gets too excited at new places and as we're having a box driven for us it's easier then faffing around at the venue and wasting the driver's time.

I think it depends on the horse. I wouldn't have worried too much with my old horse - he was pretty sensible when travelling and would just eat.

My mare now is a different kettle of fish, very highly strung and sweats up like nothing on earth travelling. I wouldn't feel happy leaving her with tack on whilst travelling. She is the sort of horse that can get trapped in an acre of fresh air.:o

Would hate to think how sweaty she'd get when you think of how hot she gets just walking out hacking! Did you ever get my FB message about that transport place, btw?

Yeah I did - I'd be up for that next month? Can't remember what you said about uni commitments etc!

Am half tempted to hop in lorry and come to the farm ride with you!

No room else I'd drag you too!

It's open all the time, you just turn up. Dreading going on a weekend day but was only day other livery was free!
Would much rather do a weekday, especially when I have 'optional' lectures! ;)

He he - prob not a good idea anyway as she would prob be a nutter and I haven't got a bp! Def up for next time though!

Pick a week day when you can - and let me know. Needs to be pretty quick if you get what I mean as I will be back on full shifts otherwise. Was it 30 quid each?

Will message you on fb instead of spamming thread! x

Just a little word of caution - I very often travel tacked up too. My mare has shark fin withers and her saddle never moves an inch and therefore travelling the girth is fairly loose (at least not as tight as if you were riding) but one day we arrived at destination and the saddle had slipped right round - God knows how that happened - but it certainly upset her!

School boy error there - easily avoided, silly mistake but just thought I would pass it on ;)

Personally, i would not do it - there is a risk to both horse and tack. It may be that the setip of your lorries/trailers is a bit different to what we use over here - the chances of something going wrong are too great in my book.

I only use boots with anxious travellers or long distances, so I am not over anxious with travelling. My horses are all pretty much the same to tack up at home as away, so not really an issue, but nevertheless I still would not do it.

I dont travel tacked up but can see why people would - I see people turning up to hunt and pull out tacked up horse as I am tacking up and phaffing about (trying not to get dirty in process).

If he got really bad to tack up when arrive I might consider it although I think I would only do it with the camera back in action (OH not put back in this car yet). Probably saddle only then put bridle on in trailer (not sure could get saddle on in trailer). Saying that our hunt sec. used to travel tacked up - now doesnt after horse totally trashed his saddle !
