I am just wondering what everyone does when they stud up to go xc schooling. Is it safe to put studs in before at home and travel with studs and full travel boots in the lorry or do you stud up when you arrive at the xc course?

you can't stud up before travel due to risk of injury and unbalancing the horse when it stands on a hard surface-you stud up before warming up for the sections you need studs for

No, as well as making the horse unbalanced and the increased risk of injury you will risk damage to the ramp and floor in the lorry/trailer.

You can get a stud guard that fits around the hoof for this purpose, looks like the horse is wearing platforms!

Having had a horse manage to get its shoe down the inside of the opposite leg's travel boot and slash the entire length of the canon open, the thought of travelling with studs in makes me go cold! The risk of them standing on themselves or similar is just too great.

Catroo - where can you get these stud guards? THey sound like they might be useful for when you need to put the horse back on the lorry between phases / when it rains!

Just travel in blank studs, its alot easier as when ur ready to stud at the venue its blank stud out and real stud in no retapping or cleaning out of stud holes needed as u already did that before u put the blank stud in at home. I even do mine the night before and turn him back out with blank studs in to save time if i have to leave early the next day!
