Travelling with tack?!

I would travel with a saddle, and martingale (straps tied safely away) but not a bridle as I would be concerned that the horse could catch the bit on something and casue it to panic. I have seen lots travel with bridles, but it's not my choice.
 
Not sure why - do you mean your horse is tacked up?

Always done on hunters in my day.

Though always throw a rug on as you don't want saddle panels rubbing on partitions.
 
Yes only for short trips. My horse is happier and travels better when tacked up. Don't ask why she is just strange.
 
funny we saw a horse traveling in a trailer yester with tack I would never contemplates this I think its dangerous \i hear of a trailer accident where the trailer flipped horse was lying on the side and the saddle got stuck under the partition . Had to get fire brigade out to rescue it . Takes seconds to put a saddle on at a show could take ours to rescue a horse with saddle stuck on in accident:(
 
Yep, i do this at least 3 * per week, on my way to use the school or go to the farm ride, which are about 3 to 6 mins drive away. Would rather tack up at home than there, as i consider that to be the safer option, plus i have a cctv cam to check up on him whilst travelling.
 
The times i have travelled my mare without tack on we have either had an accident her rearing and getting stuck on partitions is her speciality)or it takes us about 20 minutes to tack up at an event as she is so restless she will not stand still.

when ever i have travelled her with tack on she stands quiet in the trailer whilst travelling and is quiet and happy when unloaded so much so i can tie her up to the trailer.

It's like when she is tacked up she knows she is working.
 
I've done 4 seasons as a hunt groom and horses always travel to and from meets tacked up. It has never caused a problem. I don't go with them and there's no way they'd tack up at the meet.

If your only travelling for 3-6mins is that not a bit of a waste of time, wouldnt you be aswell hacking?:confused:

And can you explain to me what makes you think its safer??

My share horses owner often travels him tacked up, especially to a hunt meet, as he is SUCH a fidget trying to tack up at home, let alone somewhere exciting with lots of other horses around. He is travelled alone in the trailer without a partition with no boots too. He had an accident whilst wearing boots as couldn't feel his legs so he just travels better like that.
 
Did it once. I had hacked to a PC rally 10 minutes drive away from the livery yard, but the light dropped far quicker than expected and the rally ran late. I had reflective gear with me, but the DC arranged for another person to run us home rather than us hack back in the low light.

I didn't even have a headcollar, nevermind boots and rugs. Pony went in with stirrups run up and their headcollar over her bridle. Seemed no worse for wear!

No worries....to get to both places i need to travel on a mainroad, no short cuts or cut throughs therefore i need to box to get there. Also at the moment it is difficult to tack up in the lorry due to limited space and i can't park and tack up tied by the side of the lorry also due to limitted space where i have to park. Therefore safer to tack up at home pop on the lorry, pop off get on and go.
 
I travel to events tacked up as tacking up an exited horse isn't easy; in the case of my old mare who I used to team chase it would have been down right dangerous.

I always travel home untacked as they calm down afterwards.
 
I travel short distances with a saddle on my youngster but it is a double trailer with the partition removed. Perhaps not a good idea with the partitions in & a youngster but an older steady type should be ok I think.
 
I dont think its 'safer' to travel with tack on unless you are going somewhere where you know you wont have a safe place to ensure your horse is tied up while tacking.

One of the only beaches I have access to you literally have to park on the side of the road and unload on to a footpath so I would always travel with his saddle on & then just throw on his bridle in the box before I pull out. Not safe to be trying to hold horse while throwing saddle on, while on a footpath!

Depends on where I'm going or how long the journey is. Of course I think its more comfortable/safer for them to travel without but I think you have to weight up the options in terms of where you are going & the distance you are travelling.
 
I have, once, I wangled a lift (most of the way) home from a show. No time at all in a wagon, 2 hours hack! Unloaded in a sidestreet of the main road , hopped on, and we were on our way.
