does anyone travel their horse/pony in a trailer without a partition in. I am seriously considering doing this as it will lighten my trailer - Is it safe has anyone had any bad experiences - is it a bad idea - opinions or expreriences please folks - thanks x

Yes loads of people travel without a partition. Make sure you leave the breastbar in and cross-tie the horse and it should be fine.

Over here, horses are very often travelled loose, however our trailers are quite different to your little ones over there. All of mine travel loose and generally turn to face backwards, which is why you will want to tie your horse.

thanks Tia - but what happens if they move from side to side does it not rock the trailer or dont htey move about generally?

I've trailered a friend of mine's horse back in the UK for her and she took her partition out; to be honest the horse really didn't move about, she found a comfortable spot which was on the diagonal and just stayed there. The trailer didn't sway at all as she settled and travelled quietly.

Just to add; mine over here always travel the same; they park their butts into the corner closest to the drivers side and just stand there facing backwards. Occasionally the stick their noses out of the slats in the side of the trailer but no they don't move around.

i've known a couple of horses that bang like furry, then are very happy if you take the partition out.

did i read somewhere that it is illegal to travell without the partition, or , did i imagine it...?

Never used to be; can't imagine why it would be illegal? I ran a quick search and didn't find anything saying that it was illegal to travel without a partition.

Hope its not illegal cos we do it. Murphy hated travelling in trailer with the partition in. We took it out, and put a full width breast bar in, he is cross tied and travels very happily. He stands at an angle across the trailer and spreads his hind legs really wide to balance himself.

Don't believe it is illegal! I think alot of horses prefer it, they can use their legs better for balance and often prefer to stand at an angle and often facing backwards!

My friend always travelled her horse without the partition as he always managed to damage himself if she didn't give him the whole width of the trailer. She took him about 50 miles to a one day event to find he's trashed his travel boots, pulled a shoe off and cut 2 of his legs - he was very popular that day!
Without the partition he travelled fine.

thanks for all the replies - now i need to find someone who has a full width unwanted breast bar for a rice trailer in suffolk - anyone????????????????

Yes I do too but make sure you cross tie and use a breast bar. My boy straddles the whole trailer in mine but then he is a stocky Welshie that takes up a fair bit of room (especially the belly)!!!!

I travel mine without a partition. She travelled crap with a partition so i looked into it. Apparently they feel trapped when you go round a corner and think they are going to fall over. When you remove the partition they dont feel trapped and can move their feet to right themselves. My mare is proof of this and since removing the partition she travels brill.

I had a full length breast and breeching bar made (good old dad) and i attach her to both sides so she cant turn round.

Cant see it being illegal they make 3/4 trailers for mares and foals they are'nt partitioned!!

Good luck.

I travel mine with out the partition. We took it out for sisters horse as she would get the partition down, resulting in her coming out of the trailer with cuts. She then travelled so much better without the petition. It has also proved successful for mine, she spreads her legs out really wide and has much better balance

As far as i know it is only illegal to travel two, with back shoes, with no partition. But i may be wrong.

My horse travels without a partition and he shuffles around slightly to get comfortable but then he settles down fine. He is cross tied so he can't move too far but he can balance himself. My friend took him in her trailer on Friday and I drove along behind and I swear he was craning his neck round to see where I was and if I was keeping up!

I travel Ali without a partition as he is near impossible to load with a partition. He moves about a small bit to make himself comfy but after that he's fine.

I have one of mine that will grudgingly agree to travel without the partition, and he tends to stand diagonally. Having two I now have to pick and chose where and who. As far as I am aware it is illegal to travel two horses without the partition

I know someone who travels very expensive 3 yo dressage youngsters with no partition in the lorry. As they are usually turned out together they are always fine.
